Beijing, October 8th (Xinhua) - What colors do human eyes see? Is it only related to vision? A new study recently published in the international academic journal "Frontiers of Psychology" has found that smell can also affect human perception of color.

The human brain will "integrate" various sensory information such as visual, auditory, and olfactory senses to understand the surrounding environment. Previous studies have found that color can affect people's perception of odor. For example, people may perceive orange beverages as orange flavored, while in reality, beverages are cherry flavored.

To investigate whether odor affects people's perception of color, researchers from institutions such as John Moors University in Liverpool, UK, conducted tests on 24 adults with normal olfactory and color senses, including 11 males and 13 females aged between 20 and 57. The subjects need to face a square color block on the screen and manually adjust the slider to adjust the square to neutral gray. At the same time, their room was randomly injected with the scent of different objects such as coffee, caramel, and lemon.

The results showed that when subjects smelled the smell of coffee, their "gray" eyes tended to be more reddish brown; When they smell the smell of caramel, lemon, etc., the "gray" in their eyes is also different from the true neutral gray; And in the absence of a special odor, they identified the true neutral gray.

Researchers say this indicates that odor does indeed affect people's perception of color, but the extent of this effect still needs further research, such as how people perceive color when they smell less common odors.
