Since Huawei was cut off by the US, the Chinese smartphone market has ushered in a new round of "big reshuffle". Samsung's retreat indirectly pushed Apple to the "first" position. Fortunately, other domestic mobile phone brands are not encouraging either. The domestic camp, represented by Xiaomi, has launched the slogan of "challenging Apple", with a positive attitude towards the iPhone.

To be honest, the attitude and spirit of domestic brands are still worth praising and supporting, but perhaps they overestimate themselves or underestimate Apple. The constant voice of "self praise" gradually makes domestic brands lose themselves in the cries of "rise", "benchmarking", "overtaking", etc. However, is the actual situation really so optimistic? Stop 'self congratulating'.

Recently, Canalys released shipment data for major mobile phone brands in Q1 2023, focusing on the global market, Chinese market, and US market. It can be seen that domestic brands have suffered a disastrous defeat, and Apple's strength still cannot be underestimated.

1. Global market

Focusing on the global smartphone market, there has been little change in its ranking, with the top five brands being Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo. Among them, Samsung and Apple both have a market share of over 20%, while Xiaomi/OV both have a market share of around 10%, which is still a considerable gap, and the shipment volume has almost doubled.

It is worth mentioning that among the top five mobile phone brands, Apple is the only one that has achieved growth against the trend. As we all know, after entering 2023, consumer demand has been weak, and the entire industry is still in a recession. Samsung has also experienced an 18% year-on-year decline, but Apple has maintained a 3% positive growth rate, which is not an exaggeration. On a global scale, only Apple can achieve such strength.

2. Chinese market

Focusing on the Chinese smartphone market, the top five brands are Apple, OPPO, vivo, Honor, and Xiaomi. And brands with a share exceeding 20% still only have Apple. It should be noted that the year-on-year decline of domestic brands is significant, with Honor experiencing the highest decline, reaching 35%.

3. US market

Focusing on the US smartphone market, the top five brands are Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, Google, and TCL. This ranking is a bit interesting. The mainstream domestic mobile phone brands Huamiov and Honor have not made it to the list, and the suppression of Huawei by the United States has achieved significant results.

Moreover, among these five major mobile phone brands, in addition to Apple and Google, which have maintained positive growth, other brands have also experienced significant declines. From this data, it can also be seen that American consumers have a relatively high support rate for local brands, which is also lacking among domestic consumers. It does not make sense for domestic brands, which have a consumer base of 1.4 billion, to lose to American companies in the competition in the Chinese market.

Objectively speaking, the performance of domestic mobile phone brands in recent years is obvious to all. On the road to catching up with Apple and Samsung, domestic mobile phone manufacturers have done their best. For Xiaomi, while increasing technology research and development, they have also diversified their layout, and the configuration upgrades of domestic phones are more powerful and comprehensive, with higher cost-effectiveness. However, they still suffered a disastrous defeat to Apple. The reasons behind this need to be carefully reflected.

When consumers choose a mobile phone, in addition to choosing a brand, configuration, price, and experience are all indispensable. Compared to iPhones, domestically produced devices still fall behind in terms of experience. The iOS system and A-series chips are Apple's biggest "trumps" and also guarantee user experience, and this is where the gap lies. What do you think of this? Welcome to comment and leave a message!
