Xining, October 18 (Xinhua) (Reporter Li Jiangning) On the 18th, it was learned from the Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve Management Bureau that the only Proctor's gazelle protection station in China - the "South Bank Protection Station of Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve" - has rescued and bred nearly a hundred Proctor's gazelles within more than 6 years since it was put into use in December 2017.
The Proctor antelope is the least abundant species of endemic mammals in China, and is also the most endangered species of ungulates in China and even in the world. The lakeside area of Qinghai Lake is the only surviving habitat for the Proctor's gazelle in the world.

The reporter learned that since 2015, the water level of Qinghai Lake has been continuously rising, and the lake area has continued to increase. The domestication and breeding grassland of the Proctor's gazelle at the North Bank Protection Station (Bird Island) of Qinghai Lake has been extensively submerged and eroded, making it unable to meet the rescue and breeding needs of Proctor's gazelle. So in December 2017, the protection station conducted an overall migration, transferring 28 Proctor antelopes from the North Bank Protection Station (Bird Island) of Qinghai Lake to the South Bank Protection Station located in Jiangxi Gou Farm, Hainan Prefecture, Qinghai Province. As of now, the population of Proctor antelopes at this station has reached nearly a hundred.
With the deepening of ecological protection work in Qinghai Lake and the process of creating a national park, through a series of measures such as implementing wildlife rescue projects, community co construction and management, reducing the height of fences, and establishing rescue points, the population of Proctor's gazelle has been more effectively protected. The number has increased from less than 300 in the early monitoring period to over 3000 at present, reaching nearly 11 times the initial protection period, and the population habitat has developed from 7 to 15.
