Shanghai Pudong Lingang: Where will the second C919 final assembly plant be located?
As China's first domestically developed large passenger aircraft, the success of the C919 not only breaks the international market monopoly but also signifies the rise of China's aviation manufacturing industry. The location of the second C919 final assembly plant has become a focal point for various cities, ultimately landing in Shanghai Pudong Lingang.
The C919's second final assembly plant project is located in the Lingang area of Pudong New Area, Shanghai, with a total construction area of approximately 330,000 square meters. It will construct 4 C919 final assembly lines, as well as headquarters facilities for large aircraft, a large aircraft parts warehouse, outdoor roads, green spaces, and aprons, with a total investment of 11.95 billion yuan. Upon completion, the project will meet the future mass production needs of the C919. It is expected that by 2027, when the production line operates at full capacity, it will achieve a production target exceeding 150 aircraft.
This news has been confirmed not only by aviation industry sources but also in the 2024 Shanghai Key Construction Project List. Since its first commercial flight on May 28, 2023, the C919 has quickly become a market darling. As of August 3, the fleet size of China Eastern Airlines' C919 has grown to 7 aircraft, with a total of 3,133 commercial flights completed, carrying nearly 420,000 passengers. Air China, China Southern Airlines, and Hainan Airlines' subsidiary Jinpeng Airlines have also joined the ranks of the C919, planning to receive C919 aircraft in the coming years, further boosting the market share of domestically produced large aircraft.
Currently, the order volume for the C919 has exceeded 1,450, with a full order book. The need to build a second assembly line is urgent. This strategic project, worth trillions of yuan, has attracted the attention of many cities, with Xi'an and Zhengzhou being the most vocal contenders. Xi'an, as a long-established aviation manufacturing base, boasts a complete aviation manufacturing industry chain, from design and R&D to production and manufacturing to after-sales service. Zhengzhou not only has a solid supply chain foundation but also previously produced fuselage components for the C919. The Secretary of the Henan Provincial Party Committee has publicly emphasized that they hope China Commercial Aircraft Corporation will regard Henan as a strategic base.
However, the ultimate choice to locate in Shanghai Pudong Lingang is not coincidental. Shanghai, as the location of the C919's first final assembly plant, has accumulated extensive industrial support and production line construction experience over years of R&D and manufacturing, giving it an incomparable advantage in large-scale production compared to other cities in China.
As an international aviation hub, Lingang not only facilitates the transportation and logistics of large fuselage components but also provides "door-to-door" convenience for the C919, reducing problems associated with long-distance transportation. Furthermore, as an international metropolis and an advanced manufacturing city, Shanghai's well-developed aviation industry chain and rich aviation industry resources have formed a complete industrial link encompassing commercial aircraft design and R&D, final assembly manufacturing, and test flights, providing a unique and favorable environment for the C919's production and development.
Official documents indicate that the Lingang New Area has reserved an area of nearly 25 square kilometers for domestically produced large aircraft. This park will have a complete industrial chain spanning from final assembly integration, fuselage structure, composite materials, aircraft engines, avionics systems to testing and maintenance, as well as 100 primary supplier companies including fuselage structure, composite materials, engines, and avionics systems, providing strong support for promoting the scale and concentration of the domestically produced large aircraft industry.
The location of the C919's second final assembly plant in Shanghai Pudong Lingang signifies not only the smooth advancement of the project itself but also the concentrated development of China's aviation manufacturing industry, as well as the further improvement and upgrading of the industry chain. In the future, the C919 will continue to lead the take-off of China's aviation manufacturing industry, injecting new vitality into China's economic development.
