This scientist, who has remained behind the scenes for decades, has laid a solid foundation for the country's chip industry in the microscopic world. He is a scientific "ascetic," an educator who has nurtured countless talents, and a legendary figure in the history of China's chip development.
In 1953, Shen Xubang graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Filled with passion for serving his country through science and technology, he joined the wave of national construction. At that time, China was recovering from devastation, and its scientific and technological field was largely blank. However, Shen Xubang resolutely chose the field of computers, which was barely explored in China, and plunged into the ocean of digital technology.
In 1965, Shen Xubang's life took a major turn when he began to explore microcomputers and the independent design of their chips, a completely new research direction. At the time, Western countries had already made great strides in computer technology, while China was still in its early stages. Faced with this significant technological gap, Shen Xubang did not back down. Instead, he was inspired by a stronger sense of mission. He understood that chips are the "heart" of computers, crucial for the country's scientific and technological development. Independent chip design was the key to breaking the Western technological blockade.
From that point on, Shen Xubang dedicated himself wholeheartedly to chip research. Without advanced equipment, he built his own. Without sufficient materials, he searched high and low, reading and rereading them. To overcome technical difficulties, he often worked day and night, neglecting food and sleep, even forgetting about time. In that era of scarce resources, Shen Xubang and his team relentlessly explored the path of independent chip design in China, with the perseverance of "ascetics."

On August 16, 2024, this elderly man, who had dedicated his life to China's chip industry, closed his eyes forever. His departure is a huge loss for the Chinese scientific community and for us, as we have lost a great scientist and educator.
Academician Shen Xubang may have left us, but his unwavering pursuit of science, his boundless love for his country, and his sincere expectations for the younger generation will forever be a source of inspiration, motivating us to continue moving forward. His story will forever be etched in the history of China's chip development, serving as an example for future generations to learn from.
Academician Shen Xubang's life was a life of struggle, dedication, and brilliance. He used his actions to embody the true meaning of scientific dedication to the nation and patriotism. His spirit will forever inspire us to strive for the realization of the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation!
