Undoubtedly, China has horses for the four carriages of chip industry chain design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. However, in this part of manufacturing, our horses seem a bit thin. A few years ago, Huawei's Kirin 9000 chips had already led Qualcomm in the United States. Now, we are closely urging our "thin horse" - SMIC International.
In the past few years, SMIC has undoubtedly played the role of 'I can't open the treasury, I'll do it myself'. It has opened its own "gold mines" in Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, aiming to achieve a chip self-sufficiency rate of 70% by 2025. On the other hand, SMIC International is striving to improve its 14nm technology like seizing a life-saving straw.
However, on the official website of SMIC International, the 14nm process introduction is like a stirring pigeon, suddenly disappearing, and the latest process only stays at 28nm. It's like you just switched your TV to 4K and realized you can only watch standard definition.
However, the crux of the problem is that it is not because SMIC's technicians like to play hide and seek, but because the sanctions imposed by the United States and Japan on China, like a Venus trap, have forced our 14nm process outsourcing to halt.
Speaking of OPPO, it is another warrior on the semiconductor battlefield.
Its self-developed chip business is a powerful tool for breaking out of the tight encirclement. However, recently, OPPO seems to have hit a big red button and suddenly stopped its self-developed chip business, even disbanded the team.
It's like suddenly falling in a sprint before the finish line. Why? I think the big stick of TSMC and US sanctions is like an unavoidable shadow that has been hanging over China's semiconductor industry.
The United States is well aware that once China masters advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes, their position in the global market will be severely challenged. Therefore, the United States has come up with their "special measures", which are sanctions, sanctions, and more.
What about the results? The cessation of SMIC's 14nm OEM business and the sudden halt of OPPO's self-developed chip business can be said to be the direct result of this "big stick".
However, let's take a look at China's response. Despite the high pressure, SMIC International did not choose to escape, but instead sought breakthroughs while enduring the pressure.

The harsh wind of sanctions has affected both our 14nm chip foundry business and OPPO's self-developed chip business. However, we cannot choose to give up on this.

For SMIC and OPPO, strategic contraction may be wise, but it does not mean that we have given up the path forward. We will continue to move forward and embark on the path of victory.
