Recently, according to the renowned fuel testing company Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS), contaminated problem fuel was once again discovered in Houston, Texas. And currently, 11 ships have lost power and/or power.

The company stated that this batch of problematic fuel was provided by a supplier in Houston between March and May this year. The problem with this batch of fuel was only discovered after several weeks of use on some ships.

According to the report of the damaged ship to VPS, the first abnormality exhibited was the malfunction of the fuel pump and fuel nozzle of the auxiliary engine. Subsequently, other engines experienced the same problem and were unable to provide power normally. The reporter stated that the identified issue only began to appear after the ship switched to VLSFO fuel in Houston.

They pointed out that after encountering problematic fuel, the ship's fuel separator was unable to handle the fuel properly, resulting in the main engine/engine being forced to operate at speeds lower than normal to reduce fuel consumption.

VPS said that it detected that VLSFO marine fuel contained high concentrations of Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and its related isomers by using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The detected DCPD compound content ranges from 3000 to 7000 ppm. If these compounds begin to aggregate, the fuel will begin to exhibit a certain degree of viscosity and become more viscous, making it difficult for components such as the high-pressure fuel pump plunger and injector to function properly. Over time, it can cause damage to the fuel injection system and generate excessive sludge.

If you look back at the case of problematic fuel, you will find that this fuel issue is not the first time Houston has experienced a problematic fuel incident. According to the 2018 news report of Sindh Maritime Network, more than 80 ships were recruited at that time. (Attention: Fuel contaminated! Over 30 ships suffer! Plunger coupling seized, oil pump damaged!!) And last year, Singapore's problematic fuel caused varying degrees of failure on 200 ships, which also spread to Houston. (The truth is out! Singapore official: 200 ships have received contaminated fuel, and Glenn is the culprit)

Regarding the issue of fuel quality and potential disputes, Xinde hereby suggests that charter parties and related fuel supply contracts should include carefully worded clauses that clarify fuel specifications, sampling procedures, and how to divide responsibilities for time losses caused by inspections or accidents.
