On October 9th, Red Star Capital announced that the winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded to Harvard University economics professor Claudia Goldin for her research on promoting understanding of women's labor market outcomes.

Claudia Golding was born in New York, USA in 1946. In 1972, she obtained a doctoral degree from the University of Chicago in Illinois, USA. She is a renowned economist in the United States and the first woman in the economics department of Harvard University to receive a tenured teaching position. Her research areas mainly include income inequality, gender economics, technological change, education, and immigration.

Golding first comprehensively reviewed the income and labor market participation of women over the centuries. Her research reveals the reasons for these changes and the main root causes of gender disparities that still exist in the labor market.

The representation of women in the global labor market is severely inadequate, and when women work, their income is lower than that of men. Golding collected archival data from the United States for over 200 years, demonstrating how and why gender differences in income and employment rates change over time.

Jakob Svensson, Chairman of the Economic Science Awards Committee, said: "Understanding the role of women in labor is important for society. Thanks to Golding's pioneering research, we now have a better understanding of potential factors and obstacles that may need to be addressed in the future

The Nobel Prize in Economics can be traced back to 1968. From 1969 to 2022, the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded 54 times and 92 winners were born. It is understood that compared to previous years, the Nobel Prize prize this year has increased by 1 million Swedish kroner. On September 15th local time, the Nobel Foundation decided that the prize money for each Nobel Prize in 2023 will increase by 1 million Swedish kroner (approximately 650000 yuan), reaching 11 million Swedish kroner (approximately 7.32 million yuan).
