On October 14th, Microsoft announced on the evening of October 13th that it had completed the $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard after obtaining approval from the UK's antitrust regulatory agency, the Competition and Market Authority (CMA). This means that after more than 20 months of effort, Microsoft has finally successfully acquired Activision Blizzard.
Microsoft and Activision Blizzard are expected to complete their trading in the next few days. According to information on the Nasdaq official website, Activision Blizzard's stock trading on the Nasdaq has been suspended earlier today, waiting for further information to be released.
After the transaction is completed, Microsoft will become the third highest revenue gaming company in the world, second only to Tencent and Sony.
Previously, Microsoft had stated that after completing the acquisition, it would start adding Activision Blizzard games to GamePass next year.
It is understood that Microsoft announced the largest gaming transaction in history in early 2022, but the UK competition regulator blocked the $69 billion acquisition in April, fearing that the US computing giant would gain excessive control over the nascent cloud gaming market.
Previously, in August, Microsoft submitted a new agreement to British regulatory authorities to acquire Activision Blizzard. CMA will investigate the agreement, with a deadline of October 18th. According to this agreement, Microsoft will transfer the cloud game rights of all current and new Activision Blizzard PC and console games released within the next 15 years to French game publisher Ubisoft.
It is worth noting that in the Chinese market, Blizzard's business in China has been in a standstill since the expiration of their existing game agency contracts with NetEase and Blizzard, waiting for the results of the acquisition transaction. However, another division of Activision Blizzard, Activision's Shanghai office, is mainly involved in game development, and its business has not been affected.
