Rebuild the "Century Canal"! The opportunity for China to change its destiny against the heavens is waiting ahead. After the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal, China has once again sparked a wave of building artificial canals, with the goals of this time being the Zhejiang Jiangxi Canal, the Zhejiang Jiangxi Guangdong Canal, and the Han Xiang Gui Canal. These three artificial canals will become the link between the Yangtze River and the Pearl River, closely connect the inland hinterland and coastal areas, open new land and sea channels, and completely change the regional economic pattern.
The Pinglu Canal, a canal about 135 kilometers long with an investment of up to 70 billion yuan, has officially started construction last year and is expected to open its main waterway by the end of 2026. This canal will connect the inland hinterland of Guangxi with the Beibu Gulf, solving the embarrassment of Nanning having to go to sea through the Pearl River Delta and paving the way for Guangxi to regain its position as a major coastal province. The Zhejiang Jiangxi Guangdong Canal and the Han Xiang Gui Canal also have great potential, and they have been included in the national comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network planning outline. Although they are still in the preliminary research and demonstration stage, various regions are actively promoting and rushing to start construction.
The Zhejiang Jiangxi Guangdong Canal is composed of the Zhejiang Jiangxi Canal and the Jiangxi Guangdong Canal, with a total length of over 1900 kilometers and a total cost of over 300 billion yuan. Its strategic and economic value is significant, and it will become a key link connecting the Yangtze River Delta, the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, and the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region, bringing significant opportunities for regional economic development. For Guangdong and Zhejiang, this will be a low-cost transportation channel, which will help expand the economic and industrial hinterland, and provide new sea routes for the central and western regions. For Jiangxi, this will be an opportunity to change fate against the weather, restore the advantages of the water transportation era, reduce the transportation costs of bulk goods, and drive the transfer of industries in coastal areas.
However, why has the Pinglu Canal progressed so quickly, while the Zhejiang Jiangxi Guangdong Canal has not yet officially landed? Building a canal is not an easy task, facing challenges such as environmental and ecological issues, huge investment, and cost-effectiveness. The total investment of the Zhejiang Jiangxi Guangdong Canal may exceed 300 billion yuan, which is a huge number that can even be compared to the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge and the Sichuan Tibet Railway. The construction of Zhejiang Jiangxi Guangdong Canal also faces challenges such as complex geographical environment, the Nanling Mountain Mountains, and water source problems. Therefore, when promoting this project, it is necessary to fully consider the balance between cost and economic value.
The era of high-speed rail has arrived, but it is still necessary to vigorously build canals. The cost of water transportation is much lower than that of railway and road transportation, making it an ideal choice for transporting bulk goods. The Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal has proven the durability and effectiveness of water transportation thousands of years ago, and now inland waterway shipping is once again highly valued and has become a part of the domestic circular strategy. Inland ports will play an important role in the internal circulation and provide new opportunities for the development of inland cities. Therefore, there is still a reason to vigorously build the canal, especially in the current situation of prominent debt issues, where economic value is even more important.
In China, the reconstruction of the "Century Canal" is not only a huge infrastructure project, but also a measure that brings opportunities for regional and national development to change fate.
