Universal Music Group Renews Deal with Meta to Deepen Music Content Collaboration
Universal Music Group (UMG) on Monday announced it has renewed its agreement with Meta Platforms (Meta), the parent company of Facebook, to further deepen their collaboration and create new opportunities for UMG's artists and songwriters.
The renewed agreement marks a new milestone in the music content field since the two companies first partnered in 2017. Meta said that since the partnership, both parties have been exploring new channels and creative ways to integrate licensed music into the Meta ecosystem, including virtual reality experiences on Facebook, Instagram, Meta Quest and Horizon, user-generated content (UGC), live streaming, and other Meta products.
The new agreement will expand UMG's monetization opportunities, as well as those of its artists and songwriters, further including opportunities in the short video sector. In addition, UMG is collaborating with Meta to license music for WhatsApp, unlocking future value for its artists and songwriters.
Tamara Hrivnak, Vice President of Music and Content Business Development at Meta, said: "We are delighted to announce the renewal of our agreements with Universal Music Group and Universal Music Publishing Group, both of whom are innovators in the space of music on social media, particularly across Meta's family of apps. This collaboration builds on the understanding that music helps us connect, bringing fans, artists and songwriters closer together, not only on established platforms like Instagram and Facebook, but in new ways on platforms like WhatsApp. We are incredibly grateful to the Universal Music team and look forward to deepening our partnership in the years to come."
Michael Nash, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer, Universal Music Group, said: "Since our landmark agreement in 2017, Meta has demonstrated its commitment to artists and songwriters by helping to expand the importance of music across its global community and network of platforms, creating new opportunities and applications that allow music to amplify and lead engagement and conversation. We are excited that Meta shares our artist-centric vision of respecting human creativity and fairly compensating artists and songwriters. We look forward to continuing to collaborate on addressing unauthorized AI-generated content that may impact artists and songwriters so that Universal Music Group can continue to protect their rights now and in the future."
