"One-time use" and 6 Products That Are a Rip-off: How Many Consumers Have Been Taken Advantage Of?
As people's living standards continue to improve, so does their demand for a higher quality of life at home. This has led to a constant improvement and innovation of home products, especially trendy household items that have become very popular. They boast appealing aesthetics and meet certain needs, making many netizens eager to purchase them. However, some of these products are nothing but scams, designed to "rip off" consumers. After buying them and experiencing the "IQ tax," many consumers regret their purchases. This article will list several such products, so you can see if any are in your home.
1. Screen Magnifier: Enlarged Screen or Enlarged Frustration?
Screen magnifiers claim to enlarge the phone screen through their lenses, and are very affordable, usually costing around 30 yuan. At first glance, this seems like a practical tool. But once you actually try it, you'll realize it's just a waste of money.
You need to find a specific angle to clearly see the enlarged image, requiring constant adjustments to the magnifier or viewing angle. The enlarged image is also prone to distortion. Due to enlargement using lenses, if the lights are on indoors, the lenses will reflect the light, severely affecting the viewing experience. More importantly, the image quality on the lens isn't good, the clarity is poor, and it can't compare to the phone's display.
Therefore, screen magnifiers are more of a gimmick. After using it once, you probably won't want to use it again.
2. Ceramic Knife: Sharp or Fragile?
Ceramic knives, as the name suggests, are kitchen knives made from ceramic. They claim to be sharper than traditional knives, and many people have tried it out for the novelty.
Ceramic knives are indeed sharper than expected, whether you're slicing ginger or meat. But they also have a significant drawback: the blade is very brittle. If you apply too much force, a piece of the blade can easily break off. You need to take extra care during use, handling it gently. If you accidentally bump it against the counter or sink, or drop it, it will undoubtedly break or damage the blade.
You also need to be extra careful during cutting, otherwise ceramic blade fragments might mix with the food. If you accidentally swallow them, it could cause serious problems. More importantly, ceramic knives cannot cut bones, and can only be used for slicing meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, and ginger. You still need a traditional knife.
3. Underwear Washing Machine: Convenient or More Trouble?
To make washing underwear "easier," merchants have introduced specialized underwear washing machines. These machines are small, and can really only handle underwear. If you want to wash clothes, the inner drum can't even fit them.
If it's fully automatic, that's fine, but it still requires space for placement, as well as a power outlet, water faucet, and drain. Once it's installed, you'll realize that it's quite an eyesore.
If it's semi-automatic, it's even more trouble. Each time you use it, you have to manually fill the inner drum with water and drain it. The whole process takes at least 10 minutes, which is slower and less convenient than hand washing.
Some underwear washing machines are even foldable, requiring you to fold them before each wash and unfold them after each wash. It's so troublesome, who would be that "free" to do this?
4. Condiment Bottle with Spoon: Hygienic or Unusable?
To make using condiments easier, these condiment bottles with spoons combine the spoon with the bottle cap, supposedly making it hygienic and practical. But once you actually use it, you'll find that it's not that user-friendly.
If you fill the bottle too full, when you pull out the spoon, the condiment will easily spill out. It's also difficult to put the spoon back in the bottle. Therefore, you can only fill the bottle up to two-thirds full, not completely.
The spoon is shorter than the bottle, so when you get to the bottom, you can't reach the condiment anymore, and you have to tilt the bottle to scoop it out.
5. Rotating Drying Rack: Space-Saving or Labor-Intensive?
To make it easier to dry large items like sheets, rotating drying racks solve the problem of not having long enough clotheslines, and also save drying space. At first glance, it seems very practical! But once you use it, you'll realize it's a nightmare.
Because it's spiral-shaped, you need to thread the sheet in bit by bit, which is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. It's difficult to do it by yourself, and it's best to have one person hold the drying rack steady while another person slowly threads the sheet in. You'll probably only use it once and never again.
6. Smart Trash Can: Intelligent and Convenient or Useless Feature?
Smart trash cans seem like a high-tech product, with features like sensor-activated opening and automatic bag replacement, and they really appeal to many consumers. But once you experience it, you'll realize that the sensor-activated opening is slow to react. When you walk up to the trash can, you need to wait 2-3 seconds for it to sense your presence. For people who are impatient, it's really frustrating.
As for the automatic bag replacement feature, it's prone to malfunctions, and ultimately you still have to change the bag manually. Smart trash cans also require regular charging or battery replacement, and there are also safety hazards, like the possibility of burning the bag.
Conclusion
Under the heavy packaging of numerous advertisements, many products that seem practical are purchased by consumers. It's only after experiencing them that they realize they are not as useful as they appear. It's recommended that you carefully consider whether a product is truly practical and suitable for you before buying it. Don't waste your money on an "IQ tax."
