Exciting news came from Peking University on September 23rd! The Peking University team secured the global championship at the 48th International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals, showcasing their exceptional performance. This global programming extravaganza, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from September 15th to 20th, 2024, brought together the world's top programming talents.
As one of the most influential programming competitions globally, the ICPC is widely recognized as the "Olympics of Computer Programming." This year's finals attracted 141 elite student programming teams from around the world, with over 400 participants vying for the coveted championship title.
In this battle of intellect and speed, the Peking University team emerged victorious, securing the top spot with the highest number of solved problems and the fastest completion time. The team was led by Professor Luo Guojie of the School of Computer Science, Coach Zhang Qinjian of the School of Information Science and Technology, and Professor Li Wenxin of the School of Computer Science.
After intense competition, Wang Weichen, Wang Xiangwen, and Xu Anyi, three undergraduate students from the School of Information Science and Technology and the Turing Program class of 2023, claimed the crown of the 48th ICPC World Finals, thanks to their outstanding programming skills and teamwork.
The ICPC rules dictate that each team uses one computer to solve about 10 problems within a 5-hour timeframe, utilizing any of the following programming languages: C/C++, Java, Kotlin, or Python3. Once a program is written, the team submits it to a judge for execution, which then determines its correctness. Incorrect answers result in a 20-minute penalty. The team with the most correct answers and the shortest total time wins.
In the past four ICPC World Finals, the Peking University team has achieved an impressive record of two championships and two runner-up finishes. This latest victory once again demonstrates the exceptional talent and teamwork of Peking University students in the field of programming.
The ICPC is not just a competition of programming skills but a comprehensive challenge that tests teamwork, strategy development, and adaptability. The success of the Peking University team reflects not only their individual capabilities but also Peking University's significant achievements in cultivating highly skilled individuals. This triumph will undoubtedly inspire more young students to pursue computer science and contribute to technological advancements.
This victory marks another significant breakthrough in the field of programming for Peking University students and injects a powerful boost into China's computer science community. It not only highlights Peking University's robust strength in talent development but also showcases the immense potential of China's younger generation in technological innovation. We are confident that Peking University will continue to shine in international events like the ICPC, achieving even more extraordinary feats and contributing even more significantly to China's technological progress.
