"Pay Now, Pay Later, Passwordless Payment" - Are You Really Safe?
Recently, Ms. Peng, a consumer in Shenzhen, Guangdong, complained online that she unknowingly activated the "passwordless payment" function, and only realized it when she received a delivery, that her 3-year-old child could easily shop online. This is not an isolated case, many users have found themselves unknowingly "bound" by the "passwordless payment" function, even having multiple platforms activated for "automatic deduction" without clear memory. While seemingly convenient and fast, "passwordless payment" actually hides many security risks, becoming a "money-eating expert" that induces consumption and steals funds.
Silent "Binding": Do You Really Understand Your "Passwordless Payment"?
Today, almost all online consumer platforms are promoting "passwordless payment". During payment, a prominent "One-click to enable passwordless payment" button always pops up, and many people, for convenience, tend to click agree without hesitation. However, when trying to disable the "passwordless payment" function, they find the process cumbersome and complicated, causing headaches.
Take WeChat as an example. Disabling passwordless payment function requires multiple steps, from "Me" to "Services", then to "Wallet", and finally to find "Payment Settings". In "Payment Settings", you can find "Passwordless Payment" or "Automatic Renewal" options, each requiring individual selection to close. Similar situations exist on other platforms such as Alipay.
Aside from the cumbersome disabling process, what's more worrying is that many platforms have "been passwordless" phenomena. Many users have indicated that they never actively enabled "passwordless payment", yet found certain platforms have automatically activated it. Some platforms even pop up prompts to increase the "passwordless limit" when users make purchases, and with a mistaken touch, the setup is complete, leaving users completely unprepared.
Hidden Risks: Losing Your Phone, Information Leakage, Your Money Might "Fly Away"
The "passwordless payment" function appears convenient, but the security risks it brings cannot be ignored. Once you lose your phone or information leaks, you may face the risk of being defrauded. In recent years, cases of money being stolen due to "passwordless payment" have been happening frequently across the country.
The official Weibo of the Public Security Bureau's Security Management Bureau once published a case where an elderly woman found someone else's phone. She discovered that the phone had no screen lock password and there was more than 5100 yuan in WeChat Wallet. She then used the phone to make eight passwordless QR code payments, spending all the WeChat money. It's clear that once you enable "passwordless payment", the payment security will be significantly reduced.
"Traps" Driven by Profit: How to Balance Convenience and Security?
Platforms are so keen on promoting "passwordless payment" because there are profit-driven motives behind it. Third-party payment institutions receive service commissions from user transactions, while e-commerce platforms benefit from increased transaction volume. They will do everything they can to encourage user consumption and payment, unwilling to let users easily cancel the "passwordless payment" function. This practice clearly violates consumers' legal rights.
To balance the convenience of "passwordless payment" with the security of user consumption, various departments and platforms must work together to address the issue and curb unhealthy practices.
How to Make "Passwordless Payment" Safer?
- Consumer Self-Selection: Whether to enable "passwordless payment" should be decided by consumers themselves, and platforms should not force users to enable or set it up.
- Simplify Cancellation Process: The process of disabling "passwordless payment" should be simple and easy to allow users to easily close the function.
- Increase Security Reminders: Platforms should clearly inform users of potential risks when they enable "passwordless payment" and provide necessary security measures.
- Strengthen Regulatory Measures: Industry regulatory authorities should strengthen supervision of "passwordless payment", formulate more comprehensive rules, and prevent platforms from inducing consumption and violating user rights through "passwordless payment".
The convenience of "passwordless payment" is indeed tempting, but security issues cannot be ignored. Only by regulating operation and ensuring that users can independently choose and safely use "passwordless payment" can we truly achieve the convenience brought by technology, allowing consumers to enjoy convenient payment experiences without worry and avoiding becoming victims of "money-eating experts".
