The chip war between the United States and China has been ongoing for many years, and the United States has utilized its technological advantages to implement restrictive measures at the semiconductor software and hardware level. In terms of software, American companies such as Xinsi Technology are not allowed to provide EDA industrial software at will. In terms of hardware, ASML is not allowed to ship the most advanced EUV lithography machines.
The United States is constantly receiving news of chip breakthroughs, while Chinese company OPPO has announced the abandonment of self-developed chips. Some American media have stated that China has lost the chip war. But is that really the case?
The chip strength of the United States is at a world leading level, and many groundbreaking technological inventions originate from the United States. Therefore, many rules of the chip industry are also formulated by the United States, and the United States the final say whether the supplier can ship or not after using American technology.
In such a situation, to break free from the dependence of American chip technology, one can only do self research. Domestic manufacturers have indeed accelerated chip self-development in recent years, and top mobile phone brands have joined the self-developed chip team.
Xiaomi has launched multiple chips such as the surging C1 and P1, while vivo also has its own V1 imaging chip. OPPO has launched two self-developed chips, namely Mariana X and Mariana Y.
Not to mention Huawei, which has been developing its own chips for over a decade, has a very deep technical barrier. However, due to the constraints of American chips, Huawei's self-developed chips are temporarily in a dormant state.
Therefore, the high hopes of self-developed domestic chips are pinned on other manufacturers. However, OPPO announced the abandonment of self-developed chips, and the chip project that has been developed for many years came to an end. The Zheku chip research and development team with 3000 people also disbanded.
The abandonment of OPPO also indicates that self-developed chips are not that simple and require a significant investment of manpower, material resources, and financial resources. Generally speaking, designing a high-performance and highly reliable chip requires a deep technical foundation and rich experience, which requires a lot of time and resources.
In addition, extensive testing and verification work is required to ensure the performance and reliability of the chip. Even though OPPO has launched two chips and achieved some success, it still requires the support of the consumer market to persevere.
The mainstream chip products on the market are all from the United States, and consumers are more willing to accept chips with quality and guaranteed reputation. The performance of OPPO's self-developed chips in the consumer market is average, and the outcome is basically destined.
Compared to the abandonment of OPPO, there have been constant reports of chip breakthroughs in the United States. For example, Xinsi Technology in the United States has reached a cooperation with TSMC to complete EDA process validation on TSMC's N2 process, which means that Xinsi Technology has successfully mastered 2nm EDA industrial software technology.
You should know that Xinsi Technology is the world's largest EDA manufacturer, and in the chip design industry, EDA is an essential tool, known as the "mother of chips". With the support of EDA industrial software, ensure the completion of chip layout, control, verification and other processes.
Although Huawei has achieved a breakthrough in 14nm EDA industrial software, it still holds a monopoly position among American companies in the high-end EDA field. Xinsi Technology is the first to master 2nmEDA technology, which may further strengthen the voice of the United States in the chip design industry.
Looking at the situation of OPPO again, some American media have stated that China has already lost the chip war. In the eyes of American media, OPPO is a microcosm of Chinese chips and cannot reach the end.
But is that really the case? I'm afraid not. The reason why OPPO gave up is based on its own commercial considerations, not a matter of strength. On the contrary, OPPO's second-generation SOC chip design has been completed, and it is not inferior to international giants. And other domestic manufacturers have always adhered to self research and never had the idea of giving up, even if the road ahead is long, they will persist.
Just like Huawei HiSilicon Semiconductor, although HiSilicon chips cannot be put into production, Huawei has always supported HiSilicon's department in conducting necessary chip research projects.
Haisi has lived up to expectations and successively achieved breakthroughs in chip research, involving various chip technologies such as chip stacking, superconducting quantum chips, and semiconductor packaging.
In addition to Huawei HiSilicon, there are also domestic manufacturers such as SMIC International, Longxin Zhongke, Huahong Semiconductor, and Wentai Technology that insist on investing in domestic chip production and research. So the perspective of American media is one-sided. The outcome of the chip war has not yet been announced. The United States started early and has a time advantage, while the Chinese chip industry is accumulating and accelerating.
Of course, relying solely on the participation of these enterprises is not enough. The chip industry is complex, and each segmented field will have corresponding international giants participating in the layout. To continue its development, China needs to increase its support for the chip industry, including financial support, policy support, and talent introduction.
Secondly, enterprises need to increase investment in research and development, improve their technological level and innovation capabilities. At the same time, it is also necessary to strengthen cooperation with excellent enterprises at home and abroad and learn from international advanced technology and management experience. In addition, strengthening cooperation with universities and research institutes to cultivate and attract more talents is also a very important step.
Although the United States has a leading advantage in chips, its current focus is on how to suppress its competitors, neglecting the importance of technological innovation. In the end, the United States will only be trapped in its own cocoon.
