On June 30, the "National Signal" shield machine of the second tunnel in Jiaozhou Bay, located in Qingdao, Shandong Province, officially started its sea crossing operation.
It is understood that the Jiaozhou Bay Second Submarine Tunnel Project, with a tunnel length of 14.37 kilometers, was invested and constructed by Qingdao Guoxin Group, which is the largest and longest submarine road tunnel in the world. Therefore, multiple cutting-edge technologies have been applied in this construction, among which the "National Signal" shield machine, a sharp tool for crossing the sea, has also integrated numerous intelligent systems into it.

Chen Zongkai, the shield manager of the Jiaozhou Bay Second Tunnel Project of China Railway 14th Bureau, said: "Guoxin" is equipped with a series of intelligent systems, such as the telescopic main drive, the telescopic excavation silo monitoring system, the mud circulation system, Samson pressure maintaining system, and many other cutting-edge technologies, such as synchronous double fluid grouting and simultaneous assembly. The main bearing of this equipment is equipped with 4 external seals and 3 internal seals, which can withstand a maximum excavation pressure of 1.2 MPa to ensure safe and stable excavation.
It is understood that the main line of the second tunnel project in Jiaozhou Bay is 17.48 kilometers long, including 9.95 kilometers of tunnel sea area section, and the deepest point is 115 meters away from sea level. The layout of the main tunnel with two tunnels, two-way six lane and intermediate service tunnel is adopted. According to the different geological conditions of the Jiaozhou Bay sea area, the construction company adopted the combined construction method of "shield method+drilling and blasting method", which respectively excavated from the east and west sides of Jiaozhou Bay to Jiaozhou Bay, and docked in the sea.
According to the plan, the tunnel will be completed and put into operation in December 2027.
