After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union began the Cold War, competing in multiple fields, including space. The Space Race began in the early 1960s, when the Soviet Union took the lead in completing the first manned space flight mission and successfully put Yuri Gagarin into orbit. This incident led to the United States' emergency space program. In order not to lose to the Soviet Union, the United States found 40 chimpanzees as experimental animals.

Since then, the United States has followed the plan to train astronauts, training chimpanzees in the hope of allowing them to fly into space and return safely. And Ham, this chimpanzee became the first chimpanzee to successfully enter space. It was born in Cameroon, Africa, and later traveled to a zoo in Florida before being selected by the US Air Force. There, it underwent several years of rigorous training and testing, including confinement, stress testing, and gravity simulation.

The goal of training is that when Ham is sent into space, it will be able to adapt and endure the conditions and pressures of outer space. During training, as long as Ham does the right move, he will give a banana. Under the temptation of food, Ham quickly stood out among many chimpanzees. And on January 31, 1961, Ham was sent into a small spacecraft called "Mercury Redstone2". This is the first time the United States has sent animals into space, and it is also Ham's first flight.

Ham was very brave and didn't feel scared or panicked, but obediently sat in his seat waiting for the launch of the spaceship. When the rocket was launched, Ham was accelerated to its maximum G-force, but it did not lose consciousness, but persisted in maintaining vigilance. During a 15 minute space trip, Ham was exposed to high altitude radiation and low gravity environments, but it successfully carried out flights and missions. After the 16th minute and 39 seconds, Ham's spaceship began to fall and eventually fell into the deep sea.

But when the search and rescue personnel found Ham, everyone was overjoyed. Because Ham is still alive and there are no scars on his body. At this point, it received a great reward, which was two fruits. Ham returned to Earth smoothly, but doctors found that he was somewhat blind due to the high intraocular pressure he suffered during launch. But Ham gradually recovered after his recuperation period, becoming the first animal in human exploration history to land in space.

Ham, who successfully completed the task, was later arranged to retire at the zoo and was attended by a dedicated person 24 hours a day. However, soon everyone discovered that something was wrong with the other party. Ham's heart beat too fast, and he only lived for 25 years before he passed away. It should be noted that the basic lifespan of ordinary chimpanzees is around 40 years old.

Essentially, the development of space research activities is a dangerous exploration. The experiments of chimpanzees further help scientists understand the most basic living conditions in space and play an important role in human space travel adventures, development, and exploration. So, Ham is also a hero.
