The loneliest highway in China
It is the Jingxin Highway where there are not many cars running on it 365 days a year.
What is the point of spending 37 billion yuan to build a highway with sparse traffic in such an environment? Is it a waste of resources or a convenient choice to not be able to repay the cost for a long period of time?
Why is the traffic flow on the Jingxin Highway scarce?
Speaking of the G7 Jingxin Expressway, this road traverses different terrain areas and is extremely difficult to construct. It took nearly 5 years from initial construction to completion, with 300000 workers and a cost of up to 37 billion yuan. It was not officially put into use until 2019.
This road is hailed as the highest invested single highway construction project in Asia and the longest existing desert highway in the world.
But in the face of such a scenic highway, the daily traffic flow is simply pitiful, even losing tens of millions of yuan every year. Why on earth is this?
The main reason is actually because - this road is too long and the environment is extremely harsh. The total length is 2540 kilometers, and it even involves crossing over 500 kilometers of uninhabited areas midway, spanning the entire territory of the three major deserts of Badain Jilin, Tengri, and Ulaan Bu. This is a huge test for both experienced drivers and friends who want to drive on their own.
The desert and Gobi along the way may be refreshing to admire for a while, but it's hard to avoid visual fatigue when you keep looking at them. With the yellow sand in your eyes and the possibility that this road is just your own car, you suddenly feel a sense of loneliness. Who wouldn't want to maintain a happy mood during the long journey?
Moreover, there are no gas stations or service areas along the long section of the road midway. If a vehicle malfunctions or needs to rest for too long, there is no way to solve it in a short period of time.
Due to environmental restrictions and comprehensive safety considerations, this highway also has a regulation that prohibits traffic at night. Unexpectedly, the highway also has closing time.
This is not without reason, as driving in unmanned areas can result in extremely poor visibility at night. Except for the small section of the road illuminated by the headlights, everything else was plunged into pitch black. You cannot recognize roadside signs and plants, nor can you detect changes in road conditions. Once an accident occurs, it will be difficult to obtain timely rescue.
Why is it necessary to repair this highway in today's world with high-speed rail and airplanes?
Many friends here will ask why the country has invested so much money and time in building the G7 Jingxin Expressway? Isn't flying and high-speed rail both more time-saving, labor-saving, and convenient?
However, the significance of this road is far from limited to the present, but contains long-term strategic value.
As an integral part of China, Xinjiang has long been plagued by transportation difficulties due to its unique geographical environment. Even shopping has some special problems. In regions like Xinjiang and Tibet, the postage for Taobao shopping is often not included.
This inconvenience in transportation not only affects the circulation of people and goods, but also greatly restricts the development of the local economy.
The construction of the G7 Jingxin Expressway is mainly aimed at solving this fundamental problem. This highway connects five provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Ningxia, and is one of the main highways in China's high-grade highway network. It not only connects Beijing with Xinjiang, but also closely connects major cities and special economic zones along the route.
Desert areas contain abundant natural resources, but their development and utilization have been constrained by transportation conditions.
The G7 Jingxin Expressway has improved this situation, solved the traffic bottleneck, shortened the distance and time of resource transportation, and thus reduced costs. Strengthening the connection between Beijing and Xinjiang, shortening the distance between the east and west regions, and facilitating the flow of goods and personnel. This is of great significance for promoting the development of regional economy, expanding market space, and promoting national integration development.
At the same time, this G7 Jingxin Expressway, known as the "most beautiful highway in China", has also attracted many inland tourists to Xinjiang for self driving tours. Previously, it took a lot of effort to travel to Xinjiang, but now more and more people are willing to drive to experience the great rivers and mountains of the motherland, promoting the development of Xinjiang's tourism industry and promoting economic prosperity in various aspects.
Moreover, during the construction of highways, relevant departments have focused on protecting the ecological environment, taken multiple measures to reduce the impact on the natural environment, protected the habitats of rare animals and plants, and improved the stability of the ecosystem.
Most importantly, the construction of the G7 Beijing New Expressway not only enhances ethnic unity, but also strengthens stability in border areas. The opening of highways has promoted communication and cooperation between different ethnic groups, enhanced mutual understanding and friendship, and also strengthened the security and stability of border areas.
This road is not only a link between east and west, but also a bridge connecting people's hearts, injecting more vitality into the development of China.
The vast world is no longer far away
On the vast land of 9.6 million square kilometers in China, there are countless snowcapped mountains, endless deserts, peaks and fields, and complex terrain environments on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.
However, China has never overlooked any remote areas in its infrastructure construction. No matter how remote the corners are, it can be seen that the country has invested heavily in building high-speed railways, roads, and networks to achieve remote education, telemedicine, and telecommunications.
In addition to the G7 Jingxin Expressway, there is also the well-known Motuo Highway with high investment. This road was built for 50 years and is located in the world's third largest earthquake zone, with an average elevation of 4500 meters. It is one of the poorest areas in China.
People entering and exiting Motuo County need to cross over the more than 4000 meter high Galongla Snow Mountain and Duoxiong La Snow Mountain. This rugged road is full of natural disasters such as avalanches, landslides, and mudslides, and any carelessness may result in death.
Since 1961, this road has undergone five construction attempts, resulting in the sacrifice of 34 people and countless injuries. Everyone is working towards a common goal, and now there is no place in Tibet without access to cars. Tibetan compatriots can finally come out and see the outside world.
In addition to road construction, the country also attaches great importance to the construction of other infrastructure facilities in remote areas.
For example, in Yanyuan County, Sichuan, due to frequent geological disasters, it is difficult for children to step out of the mountains, agricultural products are difficult to circulate, and the elderly are even afraid of getting sick because medical resources and talent are relatively scarce.
Since 2012, the government has invested a large amount of funds in the construction of networks, with a network coverage rate of 83.95%. Information technology such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, the Internet of Things, and agricultural products have been deeply integrated, which has successfully lifted Yanyuan County out of poverty in 2020.
In order to meet the needs of only over 20 households in the village, relevant departments have decided to establish communication base stations in the deep mountains. However, the construction conditions are extremely harsh, and the tower weighing over 800 kilograms can only be transported up the mountain by manpower.
In such a difficult environment, the engineering personnel completed all the tasks from site selection, tower foundation construction, tower erection, to equipment installation over mountains and mountains in just three months.
Setting up signal base stations in areas with only a dozen or twenty households is an important component of the national poverty alleviation campaign.
The purpose of many things is not to make profits, but to create a better future. The poverty in remote areas is not the fault of the people, but is constrained by the unique geographical environment and backward infrastructure.
These countless examples demonstrate the country's determination to help people in various regions break through environmental restrictions and live a better life. With the prosperity and development of the economy, every inch of land in our country cannot be left behind!
