He has been elected as an academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences in the United Kingdom. Professor McMillan was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his groundbreaking contributions in the field of asymmetric organic small molecule catalysis.
