One year after the release of the Core 13th generation, Intel brought players the Core 14th generation desktop processor, which increased the frequency and number of cores from the previous generation. At the same time, it launched upgrades to a series of features including Wi Fi 7, Thunderbolt5, a new version of the application optimizer, and XTU. So, as the "last" generation of Core under the original naming convention, can it bring us new surprises? This initial test will give you the answer.
More than just frequency and core upgrades, the Core 14 brings more evolution
The Intel Core 14th generation desktop processor still uses the 13th generation RaptorCove microarchitecture, but has made some updates in core frequency, number of cores, cache, and platform support, while also incorporating some application optimizations. On the platform side, it can continue to be compatible with 600 and 700 series motherboards, and players only need to update the BIOS, effectively reducing upgrade costs.
However, with the release of the Core 14th generation, Intel has also brought Wi-Fi7 and Thunderbolt5 to players. Wi Fi 7 has better wireless connection performance, higher bandwidth, and lower latency, and has greatly improved security. The new Thunderbolt5 provides 80Gbps or even 3-channel 120Gbps downlink bandwidth on top of the original 40Gbps bandwidth (Thunderbolt4), and the power supply capacity has also been increased to a maximum of 240W. Players will enjoy these features on the new 700 series motherboard.
In addition, Intel has also updated a new Intel application optimizer, which is based on the Intel dynamic frequency modulation technology framework and combined with the Intel hardware thread scheduler to achieve scheduling strategies for specific application scenarios and applications, bringing significant performance improvements.
The overclocking capability of the Core 14th generation K series has also been improved, and the memory can easily support the DDR58000 specification. The IntelXTU overclocking tool has also opened an SDK, making it convenient for developers to create their own overclocking tools. In addition, for entry-level and ordinary players, an AI based overclocking assistant is provided. It will find recommended overclocking parameter configurations for players' hosts based on the user's hardware environment, combined with artificial intelligence and a large amount of internal learning and training, to achieve more convenient and efficient overclocking.
The first batch of Core 14th generation desktop processors to be launched includes six K-series products. Including i9-14900K/KF, i7-14700K/KF, and i5-14600K/KF, our testing used i9-14900K, i7-14700K, and i5-14600K with core graphics cards.
The i9-14900K/KF has a core specification of 8P+16E, with a P-core TVB frequency of up to 6.0GHz, which is 200MHz higher than the 5.8GHz of the previous generation i9-13900K/KF. It is a true out of the box 6GHz processor.
The i7-14700K/KF is the most changing product in this generation, with four additional energy efficient cores compared to the i7-13700K/KF, which will bring significant multi-threading performance improvement. Meanwhile, the highest RF frequency of the i7-14700K/KF can reach 5.6GHz, which is 200MHz higher than the previous generation i7-13700K/KF. The highest Rui frequency of the energy efficiency core has also been increased from the previous generation's 4.2GHz to 4.3GHz.
The i5-14600K/KF has a 6P+8E core, which is consistent with the previous generation. The highest RF frequency of the P-core has been increased from 5.1GHz to 5.3GHz, an increase of 200MHz, while the E-core RF can reach 4.0GHz. Although the size of the i5-14600K has not changed much, the increase in frequency has brought its single core performance closer to the previous generation i9-13900K, which is good news for mid-range players.
