The other "aerospace newcomer" in the Shenzhou 17 flight crew is Jiang Xinlin, born in 1988. Before being selected as the third batch of astronauts, he had flown tanks and fighter jets. This time, he will board the Shenzhou 17 spacecraft with Tang Hongbo and Tang Shengjie to the Chinese space station. Jiang Xinlin said that he is very looking forward to experiencing the joy of weightlessness in space.
The one undergoing training is astronaut Jiang Xinlin, who is one of the third batch of seven astronauts in China. Since being selected in 2020, the third batch of astronauts has conducted comprehensive training and preparation in eight categories and over 200 events. After being selected for the Shenzhou 17 crew, Jiang Xinlin further improved his operational and adaptive abilities by strengthening key subject training, and prepared himself comprehensively for the task.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:Mainly through this, we have a professional training team on the ground to provide support, as well as a large number of scientific researchers to provide support. And our commander has very rich practical experience, leading us to fly. I think all aspects can make me confident in this mission.
Having driven tanks and fighter jets, lucky to catch up with good times
Jiang Xinlin, 35 years old this year, was born in Kaifeng, Henan. Looking back on his journey of becoming an astronaut, Jiang Xinlin bluntly stated that he was lucky.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:From my own perspective, I feel particularly fortunate and have indeed caught up with good times. Originally a tank driver, I was fortunate enough to become a pilot, and during my flight, I was also fortunate enough to participate in the astronaut selection process, and have been able to continue to this day.
In 2006, Jiang Xinlin was admitted to the Armored Corps Engineering College and became a tank driver.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:At that time, the steering rod of that tank was spring assisted, without hydraulic assistance. It requires your arm to have strength, but it's a bit similar to what's happening now when you're out of the cabin.
After graduating from college, Jiang Xinlin participated in the Air Force recruitment, transitioning from a tank pilot driving a "land tiger" to a pilot flying a "eagle" in the blue sky. After completing six months of studying flight theory at the Air Force Aviation University, Jiang Xinlin began to learn how to fly, and his first time flying a fighter jet over the clouds remains unforgettable to this day.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:During the process of flying, I felt that as soon as I rushed through the clouds and saw the vast and flat clouds on them, my heart suddenly became particularly open. That feeling was immediately reflected in the feeling of birds flying freely in the sky. And when the sun shines, it gives me a particularly shocking feeling.
Layer by layer screening to become astronauts and embark on more rigorous training
Over the past 10 years of his flying career, Jiang Xinlin has safely flown over 1000 hours and has been rated as a first-class pilot in the Air Force. Jiang Xinlin is proud to be able to pilot fighter jets and defend the motherland's sea and sky. At the beginning of 2020, Jiang Xinlin, who was on duty in combat, received news of the third batch of astronaut selection.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:I paid a lot of attention to the tour and asked the instructor to call me. I signed up at that time.
Jiang Xinlin successfully passed the layers of screening through preliminary selection, re examination, and selection, becoming one of the third batch of seven aerospace pilots and starting rigorous training in the system.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:All of our learning and training subjects must undergo assessment. It can be said that everything needs to be tested, and the performance is always within the scope of the assessment. So the pressure on me to study is quite high.
During the transition from a pilot to an astronaut, high-intensity training put pressure on Jiang Xinlin. Especially the vestibular function training carried out to prevent the occurrence probability of space motion sickness and reduce the degree of symptom reduction of space motion sickness.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:When I first came here, my grades were generally average, probably at the second level. At that time, my reaction was quite strong. Every time I trained, I would experience sweating, dizziness, bloating, and nausea. Every time, I was almost on the edge of vomiting. Then, when we were free, we would practice on our own to continuously stimulate our vestibular function. Now, I can basically do it, but my reaction is not that strong anymore, It can also reach the level of first level.
Conduct inspection and maintenance of extravehicular facilities and equipment outside the cabin
According to the plan, the Shenzhou 17 mission will continue to carry out space science and technology experiments; Implement the task of cargo air lock cabin evacuation, and arrange for astronaut evacuation activities to inspect and repair the extravehicular facilities and equipment. According to the characteristics of the mission, the crew of Shenzhou 17 also conducted training.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:The passenger group also has our specialized physical training instructor, who will provide us with specialized training subjects such as grip strength, upper limb swing, and some push exercises. Because you don't have a good endurance every time you leave the cabin, you will definitely not be able to persist. Moreover, our work is quite heavy, so our upper limbs have high requirements for outbound activities. Therefore, I will strengthen training in this area more.
Jiang Xinlin: I am very looking forward to experiencing the joy of weightlessness in space
Jiang Xinlin said that driving a tank can experience a sense of heaviness, driving a plane can feel a sense of pushing back, and for the upcoming 6-month flight mission, I will fully experience the feeling of weightlessness.
Astronaut Jiang Xinlin:I am very looking forward to experiencing the joy of weightlessness in space, as well as overlooking our beautiful planet in space and finding the great rivers and mountains of our motherland. I am definitely looking forward to this feeling. The most anticipated thing is actually to be able to smoothly complete the task and do it well.
