Since the release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 and Dimensity 9300 processors, Chinese smartphone manufacturers have been racing to introduce new models while also seeking out additional selling points. One area that has received particular attention is the pursuit of higher display brightness:
- Xiaomi 14 series: 3000nit peak brightness
- Redmi K70 series: 4000nit peak brightness
- OnePlus 12: 4500nit peak brightness
The brightness war has reached new heights with the Honor Magic6 series, which breaks the 5000nit barrier. Each new model boasts a display that outshines its predecessors.
Realme's Bold Move: 6000nit Brightness
Realme has taken the spotlight this afternoon by announcing an astonishing 6000nit peak brightness for its upcoming device, the Realme GT Neo6 SE, which is slated for an April release.
A Closer Look at the Claim
The surprising part is that this 6000nit figure refers to the display's "peak excitation brightness," meaning that it is the maximum brightness achievable by a small portion of the screen. For instance, when viewing an HDR landscape video, only the sunlit areas will reach this brightness level, while the rest of the screen may only emit a few hundred nits or even less.
According to Realme's official data, the Realme GT Neo6 SE's display has a global maximum brightness of 1600nit and a user-adjustable maximum brightness of 1000nit. These figures are on par with Realme's flagship GT5 Pro and the OnePlus 12.
In other words, the advertised 6000nit brightness is not a revolutionary upgrade and should be viewed more as a marketing.
Realme's Search for a New Selling Point
It appears that Realme has become somewhat hasty in its efforts to find a new selling point after discontinuing its signature 240W super-fast charging feature.
A Solid Display Overall
Fortunately, the Realme GT Neo6 SE's display still offers a decent overall experience:
- 1.5K resolution
- Popular 8T LTPO technology
- Low-frequency PWM dimming
- Adaptive refresh rate of 0.5 - 120Hz
- Touch sampling rate of 2500Hz
These features should provide a smooth and enjoyable viewing experience, especially for gaming.
Performance: Not Quite 'eSports' Grade
The performance aspect of the Realme GT Neo6 SE falls short of its "eSports" aspirations, as it is powered by the Snapdragon 7+ Gen3 chip.
This processor, which debuted on the OnePlus Ace 3V last week, has been shown to marginally outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 in CPU tasks and the Snapdragon 8+ in GPU tasks while consuming relatively high power.
While the chip is capable of handling popular games like and smoothly and can even run at a stable 60fps on the highest graphics settings, it falls short of the performance offered by the Redmi K70 and the iQOO Neo9, both of which are priced above 2000 yuan.
Design: Refinements over the Predecessor
A leaked image of the Realme GT Neo6 SE reveals a design that is largely unchanged from the Realme GT Neo5 SE at the rear.
However, the front of the device has received some improvements. Realme has reportedly removed the plastic frame, resulting in narrower bezels.
Battery and Charging: No Significant Changes
According to leaks, the Realme GT Neo6 SE will retain the same battery and charging capabilities as its predecessor. It will be equipped with a 5500mAh battery and support 100W fast charging.
Camera: Waiting for Official Details
There are no reliable leaks regarding the Realme GT Neo6 SE's camera system at this time. However, based on the track record of the Realme GT Neo SE series, it is safe to assume that the primary focus will be on providing a decent scanning experience.
For users who are on a tight budget but still want to enjoy mobile photography, I recommend considering the Realme 12 Pro+. It features a large IMX890 sensor for the main camera and an OV64B sensor with a periscope telephoto lens, which is a rare find in the sub-3000 yuan price range. The Realme 12 Pro+ offers superior image quality that rivals even the iPhone 15 in certain scenarios.
