This technology transforms the traditional physical recycling model into chemical decomposition, utilizing heat and catalysts to break down polymer macromolecular chains into smaller units.
This technology exhibits exceptional performance in handling textiles with various composition. For pure polyester fabrics, the method can convert 90% of the polyester to BHET (bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate) molecules. BHET can be directly recycled for the production of new polyester fabrics. For polyester and cotton blends, the technology can simultaneously decompose polyester and recover cotton.
Research results show that spandex is decomposed into MDA (3,3-dimethylbenzidine) molecules. Notably, nylon and cotton can be extracted intact. The entire chemical decomposition process takes only 15 minutes, showcasing its efficiency and significant economic benefits.
Researchers believe that with further technological optimization, the reaction time will be further shortened. Eventually, 88% of global clothing waste will be recyclable, paving a sustainable path for the fashion industry.
