On July 28, 2024, the Chinese aerospace community was struck with grief as renowned aerospace expert and Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Wu Meirong passed away from illness at the age of 88. Wu Meirongs life was a legendary story of devotion and sacrifice for Chinas aerospace cause. Her name will forever be etched into the annals of the nations space exploration history.
Born during a turbulent era, Wu Meirongs heart was filled with a thirst for knowledge and a yearning for the future. In those days of scarcity, knowledge became her sole weapon for changing her fate. With exceptional academic achievements, she gained admission to the Northwestern Polytechnical Universitys Department of Aeronautics, a place that held her youthful dreams and marked a new beginning in her life. At Northwestern Polytechnical University, she absorbed knowledge like a sponge, diligently pursuing her studies with unremitting dedication, eventually rising above her peers.
Fate favors those who are prepared. With outstanding academic performance and an unwavering passion for aviation, Wu Meirong was granted the invaluable opportunity to study in the Soviet Union. For Chinese students at that time, this was not only an honor but also a weighty responsibility. In a foreign land, she overcame language barriers, the inconvenience of life abroad, and dedicated herself entirely to her studies and research. Her experience in the Soviet Union broadened her horizons, tempered her will, and laid a solid foundation for her future achievements in the field of aerospace.
Upon her return to China, Wu Meirong wholeheartedly threw herself into her nations aerospace endeavors. The development of the Dongfanghong 1 satellite was one of the most important tasks at the time, a major test of Chinas aerospace capabilities. Faced with this daunting mission, Wu Meirong never faltered. Leading her team, she worked tirelessly day and night, overcoming one technological hurdle after another.
The successful development of the Shenzhou series of spacecraft marked a significant breakthrough for China in the field of manned spaceflight. As a participant and witness in this monumental undertaking, Wu Meirongs name is deeply engraved on the monument of Chinese space history.
However, fate seemed to enjoy playing tricks on people. Just as Wu Meirong was pouring all her knowledge and strength into Chinas aerospace cause, a sudden and unexpected incident cast a dark shadow over her life. In 2021, news of two academicians being assaulted shocked the whole of China. One of the victims was Wu Meirong, the same dedicated soul who had devoted her entire life to Chinas aerospace industry.
The incident stemmed from an ordinary gathering. Wu Meirong and Wang Jinnian, both esteemed academicians, had been invited to a dinner hosted by Zhang Tao. During the meal, Zhang Tao expressed his desire to receive recommendations from the two academicians in order to obtain the title of International Academy of Astronautics academician. Wang Jinnian, having only met Zhang Tao for the first time, explained that he didnt know him well enough to make a recommendation. This refusal sparked the fateful chain of events. Zhang Tao, enraged by the rejection, attacked Wang Jinnian at the dinner table. Witnessing this, Wu Meirong, disregarding her own safety, bravely stepped in to stop the assault, but was unfortunately pushed to the ground by Zhang Tao, suffering a compression fracture of the thoracic spine and a lumbar spondylolisthesis.
Following the incident, the police promptly intervened and took criminal coercive measures against Zhang Tao. Ultimately, Zhang Tao, for his heinous actions, was sentenced to imprisonment and expelled from his company. Justice was served, but the harm inflicted upon Wu Meirong and Wang Jinnian could never be remedied.
Wu Meirong, the star who shone brightly in the aerospace field, ultimately fell. Her life was a tapestry of legend, hardship, and struggle. Yet she never abandoned her dreams and never stopped loving her nation. She devoted her entire life to Chinas aerospace cause, and her name will forever be etched in the annals of Chinese space exploration.
Wu Meirongs passing once again brought back memories of that infuriating act of violence. Had that incident not occurred, perhaps Wu Meirong could have made even greater contributions to Chinas aerospace industry. Zhang Taos brutality not only injured Wu Meirong physically, but also deeply wounded the hearts of those who cherish science and respect knowledge.
Wu Meirongs life was ordinary yet extraordinary. Born into a humble family, she climbed the ladder of science through her hard work and talent. She witnessed the upheavals of her time and the twists and turns of fate, but always retained her thirst for knowledge and pursuit of her ideals. Through her actions, she proved that women could achieve extraordinary feats in the field of science, and that as long as one has dreams and perseveres in their pursuit, they can surely create a remarkable life of their own.
While Wu Meirong may have left us, the spiritual wealth she left behind will forever inspire us. We must learn from her spirit of patriotism, dedication, and selfless devotion, from her rigorous scholarship and her audacity to reach for the pinnacle of science, and contribute our own strength to the realization of the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
Wu Meirongs story is a microcosm of an era, a mirror reflecting our times. It reveals the arduous journey of Chinas scientific and technological endeavors from weakness to strength, and the immense efforts made by Chinese scientists for the prosperity of the nation and the revitalization of the Chinese people. More importantly, it shows us that in a society that cherishes knowledge and respects talent, everyone has the opportunity to realize their own potential and contribute to society.
