Wuhan CDC Issues Latest Reminder: COVID-19 Cases Resurge, Practice Personal Protection, Be Alert for High-Risk Groups
On August 16th, the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new reminder. The recent COVID-19 cases in China have been on the rise since late June, and Wuhan City has entered its fourth wave of the epidemic. However, the scale of the outbreak has not caused a strain on medical institutions' capacity, and the possibility of a significant further increase is considered low.
According to data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the main circulating strains of the COVID-19 virus in China are the JN.1 series variant and the XDV series variant. Compared to the JN.1 variant, the XDV variant has not shown any significant changes in transmissibility, pathogenicity, or immune evasion capability. Monitoring by the Wuhan CDC indicates that the main circulating strains in Wuhan are the JN.1 series variant and the XDV.1 variant, with the latter gradually increasing in prevalence, mirroring the trend seen in major cities across China.
Experts advise that the majority of symptoms following infection with this current wave's virus are similar to those caused by previous strains. The virulence and fatality rate haven't changed significantly, so there's no need for excessive anxiety or panic. Following scientific and effective protective measures is sufficient.
Here are personal protection measures:
1. Prioritize Personal Protection:
- Promote good public health practices such as wearing masks, frequent handwashing, and maintaining social distancing. Ensure adequate ventilation in indoor spaces.
- Minimize visits to crowded areas and avoid contact with individuals with respiratory infections to reduce the risk of infection.
2. Seek Medical Attention Promptly if Symptoms Arise:
- If you experience symptoms such as fever, fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, or loss of smell and taste, isolate yourself at home and rest.
- If fever persists or symptoms worsen, wear a mask and seek medical attention promptly.
- Individuals with chronic underlying conditions and older adults should seek medical care promptly to reduce the risk of severe illness.
3. Manage Your Health:
- Engage in regular exercise, maintain a consistent sleep schedule, and boost your immune system.
- Ensure sufficient energy and nutrient intake, maintain a balanced diet, pay attention to water and electrolyte balance, and maintain internal environmental stability.
- Avoid believing in unproven remedies or dietary approaches claimed to cure COVID-19.
4. Keep Protective Supplies at Home and Maintain Good Hygiene:
- Ensure a supply of personal protective equipment such as masks, disposable gloves, disinfectants, COVID-19 antigen test kits, as well as thermometers, tissues, and covered trash cans.
- Keep clothing, bed linen, and towels separate from those of others, wash them separately, and use individual utensils.
5. Prevention Measures for Key Locations Like Nursing Homes:
- Strengthen standardized prevention measures, including health monitoring, ventilation improvements, regular disinfection, and equipping staff with protective materials.
- For elderly individuals (70 years and older) and those with underlying conditions, if a COVID-19 antigen test is positive, it is recommended to seek prompt medical treatment to prevent severe illness.
- Report and handle cluster outbreaks promptly to prevent further spread.
Wuhan CDC experts remind that high-risk groups, such as those with chronic underlying conditions, especially older adults with chronic diseases, are at a higher risk of infection and developing severe illness. These groups should remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent infection.
While COVID-19 cases are on the rise again, there is no need for panic. By practicing personal protection, we can still navigate this wave of the epidemic safely. Stay vigilant, protect yourself scientifically, and let's work together to overcome this challenge.
