Is the West's 6G "Bend Overtaking" Dream Shattered? China's "Thousand Sails Constellation" Leads the New Era of Satellite Internet
In recent years, the technology field has become a focal point of competition among nations. This "war" has shifted from traditional military domains to the technological arena, with communication technology battles being particularly intense. The US and Western nations attempted to maintain their network technology advantage, only to find that China's 5G development was unstoppable. To maintain their lead in information technology, the US, along with Japan, South Korea, Australia, the UK, France, Finland, Czech Republic, Canada, and Sweden, formed the 6G alliance, aiming to "bend over" in the 6G domain. However, just as Elon Musk announced a breakthrough in his Starlink project, foreign media stated that 6G overtaking is unlikely!
The US-Western 6G Alliance: Technological Competition or Restraining China's Development?
In the 5G era, the US has gradually fallen behind China, creating a sense of crisis. To regain the lead, the US joined forces with 10 other countries to jointly develop and research 6G communication, claiming that the 6G development principles signed by these countries would contribute to a more inclusive, sustainable, peaceful, and secure future. However, the US news website Axios believes this move is essentially the US government seeking to launch a "technological competition" with China, with the ultimate goal of vying for "dominance" in 6G standards. IDC analysts, on the other hand, believe that the so-called "common principles" introduced by the US and other countries are essentially aimed at curbing China's 6G development.
Despite the US's attempts to draw more countries into 6G R&D, it has become clear that this path may be fraught with challenges. First, 6G technology is still in the research and development stage, and its future remains uncertain. Second, mere technological breakthroughs are insufficient to lead technological development; more importantly, the evolution of commercial practices and technological rules is critical. Finally, the US has unilaterally designated China as a hypothetical adversary, overlooking the fierce 6G R&D competition within Western nations.
Elon Musk's Starlink Project: Breakthrough Alongside Challenges
In the 6G race, multiple countries have already started commercialization preparations. The US, Japan, South Korea, and the EU have all formulated their respective 6G development strategies and invested heavily in research and development. Among them, SpaceX, Elon Musk's company, has launched the Starlink project, considered a breakthrough achievement for the US in the 6G domain. The Starlink project seeks to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access to users worldwide by launching a large number of satellites into low Earth orbit. Currently, Starlink has over 3 million users across more than 100 countries, making it the leading player in the satellite internet sector.
However, China's "Thousand Sails Constellation Plan" has already prepared to counter the US "Starlink."
China's "Thousand Sails Constellation Plan": The Leader in Satellite Internet
In the face of the US Starlink project, China has its own "satellite internet" plans, including the GW Constellation Project, the Honghyan Constellation Project, and the latest "Thousand Sails Constellation Plan." On August 6, 2024, the first batch of 18 commercial networking satellites for the "Thousand Sails Constellation" (G60 Starlink Plan) successfully entered their designated orbits, marking significant progress for the Chinese version of the "Starlink" project.
China already holds a leading position in satellite technology and possesses advanced technologies like stackable flat satellites. Compared to traditional satellites, stackable flat satellites offer advantages such as lower cost, higher integration, and faster iteration speed, accelerating the construction of China's satellite internet.
The "Thousand Sails Constellation Plan" is expected to launch 14,000 satellites and, together with the GW Constellation Project and Honghu-3 Constellation Project by Hongheng Technology, will establish a global satellite internet network. Once these plans are completed, China will have a new network forwarding communication system, completely breaking the US and Western attempts to curb China's 6G development.
Conclusion: China's "Thousand Sails Constellation Plan" Leads the New Era of Satellite Internet
China places a high priority on satellite development technology, which is not only a new technological breakthrough but also benefits the public. China has already taken the lead in the 5G era, and in the 6G era, China will continue to strive and maintain its leading position. The successful launch of China's "Thousand Sails Constellation Plan" demonstrates China's strength in the satellite internet field and signals that China will lead the new era of satellite internet.
