41-Year-Old Academic President Passes Away, Leaving a 21-Character Message for His 4-Year-Old Son, Bringing Tears to Many Eyes!
Wei Yan-zheng, a former academician and business elite, assistant president of Huawei, passed away at the age of 41 due to illness. This Peking University graduate from Urumqi, who once traveled to half the world, ultimately succumbed to life's challenges in the middle of his journey. However, the 21-character message he left for his 4-year-old son in his final moments has moved countless people.
Life's countdown always comes unexpectedly. Lying in his hospital bed, Wei Yan-zheng's eyes were exceptionally bright, because his beloved little one was standing by his bedside. "Son, do you know what death is?" This heavy question made the air in the entire ward freeze. Who could have imagined that this once-powerful business leader would now be discussing the end of life with a 4-year-old child?
The little guy tilted his head and answered innocently, "It's like the dead fish at the supermarket, their parents can't see them anymore." This answer pierced Wei Yan-zheng's heart like a knife. He nodded gently, forcing back his tears, "Yes," while his heart cried out, "Daddy doesn't want to leave you either!"
But this academic father was not one to give up easily! Since he couldn't be there to watch his child grow, he would leave him the most precious of gifts. So, in the last four days of his life, Wei Yan-zheng started a special "tuition class." 21 characters seemingly simple, but containing all a father's hopes and blessings for his son:
"Intelligence, perseverance, friends, assistance, vision, fortitude, reverence for life and love of life."
This wasn't just teaching characters, it was imparting life's philosophy! Wei Yan-zheng believed that although his son might not understand now, these characters would eventually take root in his heart. This scene was a real-life version of "The Letter to My Son," bringing tears to the eyes of many. Wei Yan-zheng used his own way to demonstrate what it meant to "have a father's love as steadfast as a mountain." He used his final moments to plant seeds of wisdom for his son. This is perhaps the last, and most precious gift he could give.
Watching his son study earnestly, Wei Yan-zheng's eyes shone with a sense of relief. He knew that even if he left, this love would accompany his son's growth forever. This is the relay of life, this is the inheritance of fatherly love.
Let's rewind time back to Urumqi in 1975, from the father on the hospital bed. In this frontier city, an ordinary working-class family welcomed their fourth child Wei Yan-zheng. Who could have imagined that this little one would become a major figure in Huawei?
Wei Yan-zheng was a top student from a young age, "Excellent" on his report cards seemed to be made just for him. But the old trickster called fate always loves to play jokes on people. Not long after his brother passed the entrance examination to a prestigious university, a tragic accident took his life. This blow was a thunderbolt for the entire family, a heavy punch to the heart of each member. With tears in her eyes, his mother held Wei Yan-zheng's hand and said, "Darling, don't go too far when you go to university."
However, the path of a genius is never planned by parents, the gears of fate have already begun to turn. In his senior year, Wei Yan-zheng made a splash in the national mathematics competition, winning third place in the country. The Peking University admissions officers were stunned and immediately extended an olive branch to him.
Faced with Peking University's invitation, Wei Yan-zheng's parents hesitated. But ultimately, they chose to support their son in pursuing his grander dreams. This decision completely changed Wei Yan-zheng's life trajectory, transforming him from a brilliant student in Xinjiang into a representative of academic excellence nationwide.
In 1994, Wei Yan-zheng successfully entered Peking University's School of Computer Science as he desired. But he wasn't satisfied with that, he also pursued a double bachelor's degree at Peking University's National Development Institute. This dedication was truly the epitome of "an academic among academics!" After graduation, he continued his studies, earning a Master's degree from the National University of Singapore and a doctorate from the University of Southampton in the UK. This was truly a life on overdrive, making people wonder, "How much study tonic did he consume?!
Wei Yan-zheng's career development was equally remarkable, a true "overdrive" scenario. He first worked in a renowned British research institute on telecommunications, then received a government scholarship to pursue an MBA at the University of London. In 2009, he joined Huawei and quickly became part of the core team. With a million-dollar annual salary, he became the "winner of life" in the eyes of others.
But who could know that fate was secretly laying a giant trap, waiting for this gifted individual?
The clutches of fate inevitably reached out to this winner of life. In January 2011, at 36 years old, Wei Yan-zheng was supposed to be in the prime of his career. However, fate played a cruel joke on him. A small nodule on the ring finger of his right foot turned out to be a deadly devil. When doctors announced that he had a rare clear cell sarcoma, Wei Yan-zheng and his wife were stunned. "How is this possible? He's only 36!" His wife's voice trembled, as if the entire world was collapsing.
But the harsh reality was like a punch to the face. What's even more disheartening was that this cancer was extremely rare, and traditional chemotherapy was essentially like scratching an itch. 80% of patients wouldn't survive three years. This number hung over Wei Yan-zheng's head like a sharp knife.
Faced with such a harsh diagnosis, wouldn't you have just given up and accepted your fate? But Wei Yan-zheng chose to fight. He rejected the doctor's recommendation for amputation and decided to try other methods first. However, cancer cells didn't give him a chance to breathe, like a frenzied demon rapidly spreading throughout his body. To survive, Wei Yan-zheng had to undergo amputation. But that wasn't enough, he also employed a combination of fasting and chemotherapy. Can you imagine? He underwent four long fasts, the longest lasting 30 days! He went from over 80 kilograms to just 53 kilograms, a living skeleton. This desperate effort made people wonder, "Is this guy going to fight cancer to the death?"
But Wei Yan-zheng didn't fall to the illness. On the contrary, he found an unprecedented sense of ease. He shared his cancer experience on Weibo, becoming a "cancer influencer." He also went around helping to reform small and medium-sized enterprises, a true "unstoppable cockroach." Even in his final stages, he created a WeChat public account called "Wei Yan-zheng Think Tank" and intended to pass down his academic research. He truly burned himself to the last moment!
Wei Yan-zheng's story teaches us that even in the face of death, we can still live our lives to the fullest. As he taught his son, "Intelligence, perseverance, friends, assistance, vision, fortitude, reverence for life and love of life." This was not only his legacy for his son, but his life's philosophy, embodied through his actions.
On August 8, 2016, Wei Yan-zheng finally said goodbye to the world. But his light of life did not extinguish, it shone even brighter in the darkness. This one-time academician and business elite used his actions to demonstrate what it meant to "live." He used his real actions to tell us that the meaning of life is not about length, but how we burn, how we bloom.
During his cancer journey, Wei Yan-zheng didn't choose to give up, he continued to shine his light. He shared his cancer experience on Weibo, becoming a "cancer blogger." Those words, each a pearl of wisdom, brought hope and strength to countless people who shared his plight. It was as if he was saying. "Brothers, what's cancer? Let's beat it together!"
Even with a weakened body, he traveled everywhere, offering reform suggestions to small and medium-sized enterprises. This dedication made people want to shout, "Dude, take it easy!" His "Wei Yan-zheng Think Tank" WeChat public account spread his wisdom even faster than cancer cells.
Wei Yan-zheng's story forces us to rethink: What is the meaning of life? Is it only possible to create value while living? Obviously not. Even in our final moments, we can still choose how to spend them. Wei Yan-zheng chose to dedicate himself, to pass on his knowledge, to love. The 21 characters he taught his son are truly a
