I believe many people have heard of this experiment and can even memorize the entire process, but not many people truly understand the experiment itself and its background. As the problem itself suggests, if you really want to catch a cat in reality to verify the authenticity of the experiment, it just means you don't understand!
In other words, Schrodinger proposed this thought experiment to refute the uncertainty proposed by the Copenhagen School. The experiment itself belongs to the category of philosophy, not experimental science.
Schrodinger created quantum wave dynamics. He believed that quantum mechanics was continuous and could be described by wave function. However, Bohr believed that quantum mechanics are discontinuous and can only undergo transitions. Due to the existence of "hidden variables", these transitions are unmeasurable, and you never know the true state before measuring, but once measured, they collapse into a definite state. Obviously, this contradicts the continuity of wave function, which is unacceptable to Schrodinger.
According to the interpretation of the Copenhagen School, this cat is bound to move towards a strange superposition of life and death, which is "both dead and alive". In reality, this is clearly a paradox. How can there be a cat that is "both dead and alive"?
How to explain this paradox has become a philosophical challenge in the development of quantum mechanics.
For the Copenhagen school led by Bohr, in the micro world (quantum world), microscopic particles only exist and can be determined after being observed (not necessarily with the eyes, which refers to any form of observation). Otherwise, matter is uncertain and can appear in both here and there, or even in two different places simultaneously.
Before being observed, microscopic particles do not possess authenticity, which refers to the kind of reality in classical physics that we see in the macroscopic world. So how did microscopic particles exist before observation?
Simply put, microscopic particles exist in the form of probability waves, which can only be described by probability. Once observations are made, probability waves will collapse and become eigenstates, collapsing from wave to particle form.
This also leads to another famous paradox: does the moon not exist without looking at it?
This is also the paradox proposed by Einstein when refuting Bohr.
The core of this paradox lies in: what is observation? Is observation only based on human observation or measurement?
The Copenhagen school believes that, for example, Bohr used this tone to refute Einstein: How do you know that the moon is there without looking at it?
This is obviously not only a paradox, but also a contradiction: we know that the moon is there, but we cannot be certain without looking (observing)! This has a somewhat sophical taste.
Another question is, before the birth of humanity? Before the birth of humanity, did the vast universe also exist in the form of probability waves?
From this point of view, the cat itself is a observer, it can observe itself, and does not need external forces (such as humans to see, or instruments to observe) to determine whether the cat is dead or alive.
However, this interpretation cannot convince everyone. In the real world, cats cannot be in a state of "both dead and alive" superposition, they can only "die or live".
However, it has to be said that the Copenhagen school's quantum mechanics viewpoint has laughed to the end and is labeled as "orthodox explanation", at least for now.
Anyway, scientists are constantly exploring and exploring the essence of nature. As those of us who love science, we should also learn to approach science with a scientific attitude. Even if we question it, we should put forward our own views and then discuss them.
