Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, May 31 (Reporter Liu Xia) - An international joint team has set a new record for industry standard fiber optic transmission speed: data transmission speed of up to 1.7 petabytes per second on a 67 kilometer long fiber optic cable. The new fiber optic meets global standards, so it can be used without the need for large-scale infrastructure modifications. At the same time, the latest method uses fewer digital processing processes, greatly reducing the power required to transmit each byte of data. The relevant papers have been submitted to the 2023 Fiber Optic Communication Conference.
Researchers say that one petabyte is equivalent to one million gigabyte, and today's home Internet connection is lucky to reach the speed of 1 gigabyte/second. Therefore, the latest research means that a fiber optic cable with a hair thickness can carry the full speed operation of over 1 million home internet connections, and there is still room for improvement.
At present, most optical fibers have multiple cores to carry multiple optical signals, but the signals interfere with each other. Therefore, the current technology can only achieve a data transmission speed of several terabyte per second. Engineers can increase capacity by using thicker optical fibers, but thicker fibers are more fragile and less suitable for long-distance transmission, and require large-scale restructuring of existing fiber infrastructure.
The new type of optical fiber is jointly developed by scientists from the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology of Japan, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, and the University of L'Aquila in Italy. It consists of 19 cores, each of which can carry a signal. In addition, researchers have developed a compact glass chip and etched waveguide patterns on the chip using 3D laser printing technology. The chip can simultaneously feed signals into 19 cores of the optical fiber, with low energy loss and compatibility with existing transmission equipment.
Researchers point out that the latest fiber optic technology has profound implications and can be widely applied in multiple fields, including searching for planets orbiting distant stars, detecting diseases, and identifying damage to sewage pipelines.
