Research has found that the shape of the brain affects its way of working

Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, June 1 (Reporter Zhang Jiaxin) For more than a century, researchers have always believed that the brain activity patterns that define our experiences, hopes and dreams are determined by the way different brain regions communicate with each other through a complex network of trillions of cell junction. A study led by researchers from the Turner Institute of Brain and Mental Health at Monash University in Australia examined over 10000 different maps of human brain activity and found that the overall shape of the human brain has a much greater impact on thinking, sensation, and behavior than its complex neuronal connections
A study led by researchers from the Turner Institute of Brain and Mental Health at Monash University in Australia examined over 10000 different maps of human brain activity and found that the overall shape of the human brain has a much greater impact on thinking, sensation, and behavior than its complex neuronal connections.
The study, published on May 31st in the journal Nature, combines methods from physics, neuroscience, and psychology to overturn the century old paradigm that emphasizes the importance of complex brain connections and identify the relationship between brain shape and activity that was previously overlooked.
Dr. James Peng, a researcher at the Turner Institute and School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University, stated that these findings are significant as they greatly simplify the way brain function, development, and aging are studied. These findings increase the possibility of directly predicting brain function based on the shape of the brain, opening up new avenues for exploring how the brain leads to individual behavioral differences and the risk of mental and neurological diseases.
The research team used magnetic resonance imaging to study intrinsic modes, where different parts of the system are excited at the same frequency. The intrinsic mode is usually used to study physical systems in fields such as physics and engineering, and has only recently been used to study the brain. The focus of this work is to develop the best methods to effectively construct brain feature patterns.
Researchers say that just as the resonance frequency of violin strings is determined by their length, density, and tension, the intrinsic patterns of the brain are also determined by their structure, namely physical, geometric, and anatomical attributes, but which specific attributes are most important remains a mystery.
The team compared the explanatory power of feature patterns obtained from the brain shape model with those obtained from the brain connectivity model for different activity patterns. It was found that the feature patterns (contours and curvature) defined by brain geometry represent the strongest anatomical limitations on brain function, just as the shape of a drum affects the sound it emits.
Using mathematical models, researchers have confirmed theoretical predictions that the close relationship between geometric shape and function is driven by wave like activities that propagate throughout the brain, similar to the ripples formed by pebbles falling on the water surface influenced by the shape of a pond.
