No wonder China dares to show its sword to the United States and directly announces sanctions against storage giant Micron Technology, which is China's first shot in retaliation against US technology hegemony. Obviously, China dares to counter US technological hegemony, which is enough to indicate that China has made a decisive breakthrough in the field of storage chips. Otherwise, China would have no ability to counterattack the United States. However, China's counterattack also indicates that a bloody storm has emerged in the world storage chip market, and South Korea directly announced that China Yangtze River Storage has rapidly risen to become a leader in 3DNAND!
It should be noted that in the field of storage chips, they can be widely applied in fields such as smartphones, laptops, car navigation, artificial intelligence, etc., providing a solid technical foundation for market promotion and application in related industries. Nowadays, China has made breakthroughs in the field of storage chips, while South Korea is quite concerned about this. On June 3rd, the Korean media "Pioneer Economy" published an article stating that some analysts believe that China Changjiang Storage has climbed to the leading position in the 3DNAND flash memory chip market. Just a few years ago, Toshiba and Samsung Electronics were leaders in memory technology, but in terms of technology, Changjiang Storage and Micron have now risen to the level of leaders, "said Dr. Cui Zhengdong of TechInsights at a conference of the International Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Association
Does Changjiang Storage really have the strength described by Dr. Cui Zhengdong? So let's first understand what flash memory chips are. Storage chips are mainly divided into two categories: dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and flash memory (NANDFlash). DRAM is mainly used for reading and writing temporary data such as memory modules, while flash memory is mainly used for storing long-term data such as solid-state drives. You should know that Changjiang Storage was established in 2016 and is 100% owned by Tsinghua University. Its main research direction is in the field of chip storage. On December 2nd last year, South Korean media "Global Economy" published an article stating that China's NAND flash memory technology is catching up quickly. Chinese semiconductor company YMTC, which focuses on NAND flash memory, has started mass production of 232 layer stacked NAND flash memory.
In 2022, the world launched the 232 layer 3DNANDFlash technology, achieving a catch up with international giants. Changjiang Storage has also launched its self-developed and self-produced crystal stack architecture, Xstacking, which can improve the read and write speed and stability of the chip. It can be said that the growth momentum of Changjiang Storage has improved the development level of cutting-edge NAND, and South Korea believes that Changjiang Storage has posed a substantial threat to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Dr. Cui stated that,
The 232 layer NAND, which is being mass-produced by Yangtze River Storage and American storage company Meguiar, is easily available on the market. Although the 128 and 176 layers are the main products in the NAND market, with the mass production and launch of the 232 layer, South Korean semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have become nervous.
The current situation in South Korea is that although Samsung Electronics has started mass production of the eighth generation VNAND (236 layer) storage chips, it is understood that the supply in the market is lower than Meiguang or Changjiang Storage. That is to say, Samsung Electronics' production capacity is still unable to compete with Meiguang and Changjiang Storage, which means that Meiguang and Changjiang Storage will occupy the mainstream market of 232 layer flash memory chips. This means that South Korean enterprises will face more and more severe international competition. Especially at present, China does not allow Meguiar's sales in the Chinese market, which also means that the memory chip market in Chinese Mainland will be occupied by Chinese domestic enterprises. For Korean companies, it's just bad news, after all, Korean companies already mean there's not much opportunity.
In addition to political factors, South Korea has been surpassed by Yangtze River Storage in the field of technology, which also means that with China's huge production capacity, it can fully fill the vacant market poured out by Meiguang. And Korean companies have no ability to fill this market gap, not only due to their technological limitations, but also due to their production capacity constraints. What scares the South Korean side is not only the storage market, but also the crazy technological iteration of China Changjiang Storage. Dr. Cui said, "Changjiang Storage skipped the 176 layers in the middle stage of NAND stacking and achieved 232 layers in just 4 to 5 years, becoming a leading company in the semiconductor industry in a short period of time.
If viewed from the perspective of Western countries, China should not experience generational development in the field of technology, which logically makes sense. The problem is that Chinese companies have achieved this, and China has achieved technological overtaking on curves. Dr. Cui emphasized that "in fact, from the product analysis of Yangtze River Storage, the maturity of mixed bond synthesis is quite advanced." As individuals, we may not be familiar with the relevant technical content, but as a professional, making such a high evaluation is enough to see the breakthroughs made by Chinese enterprises in the field of technology. It is precisely because of this that China dares to shine its sword against the United States, and in the field of storage chips, China dares to counter American technology companies.
Although the United States still imposes an embargo on key equipment such as lithography machines on China, the United States is attempting to use these key equipment to completely stifle the development of China's chip industry. However, Dr. Cui said, "NAND is different from DRAM in that it does not utilize extreme ultraviolet (EUV) devices, but rather current research and development equipment that can be added to the second generation in the future. Although it remains to be seen whether it can be mass-produced, it is entirely possible to develop it to 300-400 layers." However, the key equipment of the United States against China's sanctions will inevitably affect Yangtze River storage. If China cannot achieve a breakthrough in lithography equipment, So Yangtze River storage will inevitably be affected by development and production. However, this South Korean doctor believes that with current equipment and technology alone, it is possible for China to develop 300 to 400 layers of NAND.
The biggest concern for South Korea is currently, as Changjiang Storage and Micron Technology have begun to dominate the 232 layer flash memory chip market, which also means that South Korea is already lagging behind. If South Korea cannot seize its existing market share with China and the South Korean government cannot establish good relations with China, then South Korea will face a serious industrial crisis. Currently, semiconductor companies are in a low period, and whoever can grasp the Chinese market will be able to survive in the severely competitive chip market. However, with the rise of China's technology sector and breakthroughs in flash memory technology, there are not many opportunities left for Korean companies. The technology war between China and the United States has already predicted that South Korea will be marginalized, and if South Korean companies do not seize the last straw, they may find it even more difficult to sustain themselves!
