Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, June 7 (Reporter Liu Xia) Scientists from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Branch have developed a new type of superconducting diode, which is more energy-saving, can process multiple electrical signals at a time, and also contains a series of gates to control the flow of energy. The previous superconducting diode does not have this function. The new superconducting diode will help expand the scale of Quantum computer and improve the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The relevant paper was published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Communications.
Senior author and associate professor at the School of Physics and Astronomy, Fred Prybig, pointed out that scientists hope to make computers more powerful, but current materials and manufacturing methods will soon face some hardware bottlenecks, requiring new methods to develop computers. One of the biggest challenges in improving computing power is its high energy consumption. Diodes are usually made of semiconductors, but scientists have always hoped to use superconductors to make diodes because superconductors can work without losing energy.
In the latest research, the Prybig team created a new superconducting diode using three Josephson junctions. These Josephson junctions are made by clamping non superconducting materials between superconductors, which are then connected to semiconductor layers. This unique design allows them to control the behavior of the device using voltage.
The results show that the device can handle multiple signal inputs, while a typical diode can only handle one input and one output. This function can be applied to neuromorphic computing, which improves the performance of AI systems by mimicking the functions of neurons in the brain.
The research team stated that the device is close to the highest energy efficiency ever, and they have demonstrated for the first time that these characteristics can be achieved by adding gates and applying an electric field. The new design not only uses materials more suitable for industrial production and manufacturing, but also provides new functions. In principle, it is suitable for any type of superconductor, and helps to promote the development of Quantum computer.
