How does Internal combustion locomotive radiate green vitality? On the 15th, CRRC's first "Ningdong" hydrogen powered locomotive was rolled off the production line at CRRC Datong Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CRRC Tatung Company).
Hydrogen fuel replaced the power of Internal combustion locomotive for the first time. "This is the hydrogen powered locomotive with the largest installed power of Hydrogen fuel cell in the world, and also the first hydrogen powered locomotive transformed from Internal combustion locomotive in China," said Liang Zhenzhong, deputy general manager and chief engineer of CRRC Tatung Company.
With the promotion of energy conservation and carbon reduction in the transportation field, the old diesel powered Internal combustion locomotive are in urgent need of new energy transformation. After comparison and selection of various new energy sources, CRRC Tatung Company chose hydrogen energy. "Hydrogen energy is a clean and renewable energy. Using hydrogen energy as power, the operating cost is about 50% less than that of Internal combustion locomotive," Liang Zhenzhong said.
In 2021, Ningxia Ningdong Railway Co., Ltd. proposed to upgrade the hydrogen power of the existing Internal combustion locomotive, and jointly established the "Xichuang Hydrogen Power Technology Cooperation Alliance" with CRRC Tatung Company and other enterprises, combining technologies such as recycling and adding materials, new energy power integration, etc., to transform the hydrogen power of traditional Internal combustion locomotive.
As the R&D, design and manufacturer, CRRC Tatung Company's technical team has adopted platform and modular design according to the customer's needs. After more than two years of research and development, the first 'Ningdong' hydrogen powered locomotive can be configured with different traction power and endurance capabilities according to user needs, "said Liang Zhenzhong.
"The 'Ningdong' is equipped with the largest fuel cell system in the global rail transit field, with an installed power of up to 800 kilowatts. Through the modular configuration of the power system, it can meet the power needs of different wheel rims below 2000 kilowatts." Huo Xiaowei, the chief designer of the Research Institute of CRRC Tatung Company Technology Center, said that the power battery system adopted by the 'Ningdong' is compatible with Lithium titanate, Lithium iron phosphate and other battery types, and can be used according to the operating conditions Flexible configuration for user economic performance requirements. The locomotive also has a hydrogen storage and supply system with a maximum capacity of 270 kilograms, which can complete one hydrogen refueling within 2 hours and can operate continuously for about 190 hours on a single machine.
To ensure safe and reliable operation, the "Ningdong" hydrogen powered locomotive has been equipped with multiple safety guarantees.
The hydrogen fuel cell system adopts intelligent monitoring, hydrogen electrical isolation, mechanical interlocking and other protective measures, while the power battery adopts fire insulation and pressure relief explosion-proof design to achieve data monitoring and graded protection. The locomotive also has a high standard fire partition wall, achieving hydrogen electrical isolation between the hydrogen storage room, the driver's room, and the electrical room. Especially, the hydrogen storage room also has an independent ventilation system, which can achieve overall replacement of air in the hydrogen storage room within 5 minutes Huo Xiaowei said.
The "Ningdong" hydrogen powered locomotive only emits water, fully achieving zero emissions of carbon and pollutants. At the same time, its silent operation effect is obvious, improving the comfort of the driver and passenger. "Compared with the traditional Internal combustion locomotive, the Energy conversion efficiency of the Hydrogen fuel cell of the hydrogen powered locomotive has been greatly improved, and at the same time, it can feed back and absorb energy when braking, so as to realize the energy-saving and efficient operation of the locomotive," Liang Zhenzhong said.
Experts said that at present, there are about 7800 Internal combustion locomotive in China, accounting for 35.9% of Locomotive. The "Ningdong" hydrogen powered locomotive can replace more than 90% of the current Internal combustion locomotive by reforming and repairing the key components of the old Internal combustion locomotive. At the same time, hydrogen powered locomotives can achieve pantograph net free operation, saving the construction cost of electrification transformation for users.
