Science and Technology Daily (Reporter Li Hongce) During the visit of French President Makron to China in April, China presented the lunar samples collected by Chang'e 5 to the French scientific community. These samples weigh a total of 1.5 grams and have extremely high scientific value. At present, these samples, which are crucial for scientific research, have been transferred to the Natural history museum in France for safe storage in a special air environment and long-term preservation in the best condition.
The arrival of the Chang'e 5 lunar sample has brought a new task to the French Natural history museum: in the next 5-7 years, the museum, together with the French National Space Centre, the French National Research Center, the Paris Institute of Geophysics and the Sorbonne University in Paris, will form the National Center for Extraterrestrial Matter to conduct joint research on the sample.
Since the U.S. Apollo program and the Soviet Union's moon program in the 1970s, until December 16, 2020, before China's Chang'e 5 returned to Earth, no moon samples have been brought back to Earth. These samples were collected from the northeast of the "Oceanus Procellarum" on the moon, including 1731 grams of surface and subsurface samples. The sampling point is located in a flat area with almost no Impact crater. This region is considered much younger than the low latitude regions previously explored by the United States and the Soviet Union.
China's preliminary analysis accurately determined the age of these surface basalt samples - close to 2 billion years old. This confirms the previous volcanic activity in the region. In addition, the analysis of Chinese Chang'e 5 lunar samples also confirmed for the first time that they are rich in water, which indicates that the water content in the polar regions of the moon may be higher.
The Chang'e 5 lunar samples sent by China to France were obtained from surface and deep samples. They are stored in two sealed containers to protect them from the influence of the Earth's atmosphere. Future research on these unanalyzed samples will help to better understand the formation and thermal evolution of the moon. This will help to study the relatively recent volcanic activity on the lunar surface, whose origin remains a mystery. In addition, the Chang'e 5 lunar samples will also be used to measure the water content in different types of minerals to determine their sources and different mechanisms for preserving water on the lunar surface.
The French laboratory has extensive experience in handling ultrafine measurements of extraterrestrial samples, leading globally. In addition to better understanding the evolution of satellite surfaces from a scientific perspective, these data also have strategic significance for the development of future lunar bases.
The main task of the museum is to ensure that the French scientific team can smoothly carry out these research plans in the coming years and provide them with the best analytical conditions.
