This is a generator from General Motors in the United States, which has been continuously generating electricity again for over 80 yearsUnder the guide's introduction, a group of tourists eagerly looked at the rusty machine deep in the cave.
The mottled rust reveals the years of waste it has experienced, as the tour guide said, it has been working here for over 80 years. It is also the first hydropower station in Guizhou Province. And it was Chen Zudong who brought it to the deep mountains of Guizhou.
Take orders in the face of danger
Comrade Zudong, are you willing to accept the task of building a hydropower station
Can we still build hydropower stations these days
As long as you are willing, you can definitely build it
Chen Zudong never expected that, in such a time of intense war and suffering, he would still have the opportunity to build hydropower plants for the country. Despite such large facilities, he only saw them shortly after graduation during inspections in the United States and India. At that time, he had a dream of building such a power plant for his hometown, but he never succeeded.
When Chen Zudong first graduated from Tsinghua University in 1935, the international situation was already quite tense. As a highly educated scholar, his social status is not too low compared to many "mud legged people" scattered throughout China, and he can even be said to be respected wherever he goes.
But no one would have imagined that the outbreak of war would destroy everything.
Chen Zudong, like the people of his hometown, began a long journey of escape. The long journey had left him numb and exhausted his savings. At first glance, it was no different from other fleeing civilians.
But history always favors him. Soon he had the opportunity to get out of the predicament.
On that day, a man who called himself Major 41 of Arsenal came to him and asked him to help build a hydropower station. This opportunity was clearly a dream for Chen Zudong, so he almost didn't hesitate and agreed to this request.
At that time, most of the transportation fortresses and important ports along the southeastern coast of China were under the control of Japanese invaders, and some military factories that were originally distributed along the southeastern coast were forced to migrate inland due to the situation.
Most of the inland areas of our country have many mountains and few rivers, with high mountains and far waters along the way. Many military factories have suffered significant damage during strategic relocation. When they finally met in the southwest Home front, they were basically "defeated soldiers".
However, the war will not stop because of this. The front-line forces are in urgent need of arms supply, and the armament factories in the Home front cannot stop. Finally, Zhong Daochang integrated these remaining troops to form the "41" Arsenal.
As a rare intellectual in that era, Chen Zudong was naturally entrusted with an important task and became the director of 41 Arsenal.
In order to solve the construction problem of the hydropower plant as soon as possible, Chen Zudong immediately went around from the beginning of his tenure, with the aim of finding a suitable place to build a hydropower plant in the remote mountains.
At that time, many people also questioned this and believed that it was impossible to build a hydroelectric power plant in the deep mountains and forests. But Chen Zudong does not believe in evil. With his "one track" effort, the site selection of the hydropower plant has truly begun to take shape.
Special site selection
When selecting a site for a hydroelectric power plant, Chen Zudong can be said to have racked his brains, considering both the issue of avoiding being bombed by Japanese planes and whether water power can be used normally.
After some survey and discussion, Chen Zudong and his party decided to locate the site in a special place, an inconspicuous basement of Tianmen Cave, Loushanguan, Tongzi County, Guizhou Province.
It is said to be a basement, but in fact, Chen Zudong has his own considerations.
Guizhou is a large mountainous area, with Karst Plateau landform accounting for more than 60% of the province, and karst caves are almost all over Guizhou. This kind of terrain, on the one hand, provides unique conditions for military factories to avoid Japanese raids, but on the other hand, it also makes the initial construction of military factories more difficult.
But Chen Zudong had no choice, and the workers in Arsenal had no choice. Chen Zudong and the workers wrote the answer with their actions, whether to sit idly by or find a way out in a desperate situation.
Under the leadership and initiative of Zhong Daochang, Tongzi County sent more than 100 migrant workers to participate in the hydropower plant construction project. Migrant workers have made significant contributions to the construction of hydropower plants, and Chen Zudong also takes all of this seriously. His contemporary work Stone Work Song deeply reflects the contribution of the people in the Home front to the Anti Japanese War.
Unfortunately, the stone tablet engraved with the song 'Stone Workers' was flattened in 1964 and its authenticity is no longer recognizable.
With the joint efforts of Arsenal and migrant workers, the construction of the generator room in the basement was soon completed.
The basement covers an area of about 56 square meters. At the entrance, Chen Lifu personally wrote the seven characters "Enter the Tianmen Gate and seize the Tiangong".
The completion of the construction of the generator room is only the first step towards putting the power plant into operation, and there is still one urgent matter to be solved - the generator.
At that time, China was not without the ability to independently produce generators. Prior to this, most military factories were distributed along the southeast coast. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, these military factories were also affected to varying degrees and are now unable to produce generators at all.
In the end, Chen Zudong decided to "save the country with a curve" - to purchase from the United States.
At that time, many people also questioned:Will the US be willing to sell us the generator? Can China really afford the cost of generators?
Chen Zudong vigorously opposed public opinions and provided answers with practical actions. He first joined forces with the leaders like General 41 of Arsenal, personally analyzed the feasibility of the power plant here to the superior, and promised that it would be put into use within the time limit. With the concerted efforts of everyone, they finally received the relevant funding.
With money, you don't have to worry about whether you can do business, especially with capital countries like the United States. In the end, the supply issue was also properly resolved.
But another problem soon followed: due to the heavy enemy troops guarding the ports of coastal cities at that time, ordinary land and water transportation was unable to send the generators back to China normally. And the generator is far away from the United States and is exceptionally bulky, so it can only be transported by air from the United States to India first, and then back to China from India.
But it is obviously not easy to carry two generators exceeding a hundred tons, and the only cargo plane capable of carrying such a capacity is the giant aircraft in the United States.
In the end, Chen Zudong personally reached cooperation intentions with India and the US Air Force.
The literature on this process is quite limited, but its difficulty is undoubtedly self-evident.
The entire process took over two years. Since the generator has been in the open air and unattended environment for a long time during transportation, Chen Zudong and others found that many of its instruments and parts had been damaged when the generator was actually transported to Tongzi County.
Helplessly, they had to repair and maintain the damaged parts as much as possible. However, due to limited technology at that time, Chen Zudong and others made every effort to maintain the basic power generation of the device.
After the victory of the Liberation War in 1946, 41 Arsenal was demobilized, and the custody of Tianmenhe Hydropower Station was officially transferred to the local government.
After the liberation, the damaged components of the unit were replaced and improved locally, which changed the operating conditions and conditions of the unit and enabled it to operate stably to this day.
A precious cultural relic from the Anti Japanese War
Today's Tianmen River Power Plant can be said to be one of the rare historical relics in Tongzi County, but what few people know is that this cultural relic has also faced the situation of destruction.
On the eve of the liberation of Tongzi County in 1949, someone proposed to blow up the hydropower station. However, this proposal was unanimously opposed by the former 41 Arsenal veteran workers and the local people.
In order to protect the hydropower plant, the people joined forces and took turns standing guard, forcing the county magistrate who had planned to blow up the hydropower plant to find no opportunity to take action.
The facts have proven that the actions of the villagers at that time were very meaningful. Because today's Tianmen River Power Plant is not only a simple power plant, but also a "living" cultural relic of the Anti Japanese War.
It turned out that as early as 1944, this small power plant had accepted a modern historical figure - Chang Hsueh-liang. At that time, Chang Hsueh-liang, who was famous as a patriotic anti Japanese general, was loved and respected by the broad masses of the people. However, because of his opposition to Chiang Kai shek's political views, he was eventually "demoted" to this place for more than two years.
At that time, he may also be like the Tianmen River power plant located in the basement. Although trapped in this small world, he always cared about the people in his heart, hoping to do something more for the Anti Japanese War.
However, as time goes by, Chang Hsueh-liang, like Tianmenhe Power Plant, has not yet shown his talents, and the glory of the Party has been shining all over the country.
Although the hut where Chang Hsueh-liang was imprisoned no longer exists, the Tianmenhe Power Plant and that period of history will not disappear with it. Chang Hsueh-liang, Chen Zudong and Wan Qian, the people involved in the construction of the power plant, will also be permanently recorded in the historical atlas together.
The construction of the Tianmen River Power Plant not only reflects the basic skills of experts and scholars such as Chen Zudong, but also reflects the indomitable and resilient spirit of the Chinese people towards the War of Resistance Against Japan. It is also a historical monument to the world's people's desire for peace and unity.
Anti Japanese cultural relics like this are still distributed in many parts of the country, but it is undeniable that not all cultural relics have been properly repaired and managed. We sincerely hope that relevant departments in various regions will increase their efforts to protect cultural relics, so that the red history that should not have been forgotten by future generations can be vividly presented to people.
