Accusations of Servility and Calls for Patriotism
One woman, incensed to see so many Chinese people lining up for hours to buy products from a foreign company, began to berate the crowd, sparking a heated debate on the merits of supporting domestic brands.
Woman: Youre All Toadies to Foreigners!
Apple Fan: How am I a toady? Im just buying what I like with my own money. Whats wrong with that?
Woman: Thats exactly what a toady would say!
Apple Fan: Do you know why Apple opened a store in such a big city as Shanghai?
Woman: Its because of degenerates like you!
Apple Fan: Do you know how many jobs Apple has created in China?
Woman: We dont need them! We have Huawei!
The woman was not alone in her criticisms, but despite the lack of support from the crowd, she was met with applause as she left.
Grand Opening of Apple Store in Jingan District
On March 21, long lines formed outside an Apple store in the Jingan district of Shanghai as the store prepared to open. Many people had traveled from out of town to be there, including some who had been waiting in line since March 12, all in hopes of receiving a special opening gift that incorporated the magnolia flower, the citys official flower.
According to insiders, only two waves of people were allowed into the store. The first wave consisted of genuine fans, including one from Chengdu who had been waiting in line since March 12. The second wave was mostly made up of scalpers, and the remaining crowd of thousands was left disappointed after their protests failed to sway the stores management.
Those who were able to get into the store were overjoyed, receiving not only the opening gifta shopping bag, a sticker, and a refrigerator magnetbut also autographed photos of Apple CEO Tim Cook. They enjoyed themselves until they were asked to leave around 9:30 p.m.
The Shanghai Jingan Apple Store is the largest and most prestigious Apple store in China, second only to the store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. It is also the largest Apple store in Asia.
The store is lavishly decorated, with the Shanghai magnolia flower featured prominently in its design. Many Apple fans traveled long distances just to see the store, saying that just getting a glimpse is enough.
Reflections on Servility and Patriotism
The zealousness of Apple fans can be astonishing, even bordering on the fanatical. For those who are indifferent to Apple products, it can be difficult to understand. In a time when Chinese people are becoming increasingly aware of their countrys strengths and are eager to support domestic brands, it is inevitable that these two groups will find themselves at odds.
It is important to remember that moderation is key. While it is unwise to blindly reject all foreign products, it is also important to avoid becoming overly enamored with them. The development of our country depends on the support of its citizens and the growth of its domestic enterprises. We must always maintain a patriotic spirit, embracing the best of what the world has to offer while striving to surpass it. By working together, we can create products that are the equal of any in the world, earning the respect of others and inspiring pride in ourselves.
