Typhoon Live Stream, A Dangerous Game of Traffic: Streamers Risk Their Lives for Views, Platforms Emergency Ban
On the afternoon of September 6th, the super typhoon "Capricorn" landed in Wenchang, Hainan, sparking nationwide attention. However, while people were worried about the potential disaster from the typhoon, some streamers started live-streaming the "Capricorn" typhoon. Shockingly, these live streams were quickly banned by the platforms.
At 3:44 PM, a reporter from Shangyou News found that a local streamer in Wenchang, "Wenchang-XXXX", was live-streaming the real-time situation in Wenchang under the title "Capricorn Typhoon Live Stream". The live footage showed strong winds and heavy rain, with many trees swaying in the wind. The streamer exclaimed in the live stream: "My friend's windows were broken" "It's terrifying, really terrifying" "The rain is so heavy, the wind is so strong". However, only three minutes later, his live stream was banned by the platform.
Besides "Wenchang-XXXX", several other streamers including "XX Army Advisor" and "Hainan XX" had their live streams banned for broadcasting the typhoon landing. Why were these live streams banned by the platforms? Platform staff responded: "Live streams are prohibited from 'using dangerous behavior to gain attention', and these live streams have been reported multiple times. Streamers using the footage of the typhoon to attract likes and followers through behaviors such as 'Give the streamer a like and I'll go to the rooftop to live stream', etc. The platform has taken action against the live streams according to the regulations."
So, how dangerous is live-streaming a typhoon? The reporter interviewed Yu Long, the captain of the Ningling Getian Rescue Team, who has extensive rescue experience. He emphasized: "Typhoon weather will bring strong winds and heavy rain, both by the sea and inland, the danger level is very high. Our recommendation is that in the event of a strong typhoon, people should not go out unless necessary."
Captain Yu explained in detail the various hazards of live-streaming a typhoon: "If you live stream by the sea, heavy rain, strong winds, and large waves pose risks, especially large waves could sweep people away. There have been reports of tourists being swept away by the tide at the Qiantang River before, and the situation during a typhoon is even more dangerous. Live streaming in inland cities can also be dangerous, as sheet metal roofs, billboards, large trees, and telephone poles are easily blown down by wind, causing injuries. We strongly advise against going out during strong winds, and even more so against live streaming."
The typhoon live stream incident has once again raised concerns about the safety awareness of online streamers. While pursuing traffic and popularity, should streamers prioritize safety? Is platform supervision of dangerous behavior effective enough? These issues deserve our serious consideration.
This typhoon live stream event is undoubtedly a warning, reminding everyone involved that while chasing traffic, life safety should be the top priority. Platforms also need to strengthen their supervision, eliminate all behavior that uses dangerous acts to gain attention, and create a safer and healthier online environment.
