Lin Qi, the Richest Post-80s Entrepreneur: From Game Empire Builder to Poisoned Death Tragedy
In December 2020, Lin Qi, the founder of Youzu Interactive, died at the age of 39 after being poisoned, shocking the entire internet industry. This "richest post-80s entrepreneur" was known for his sharp business acumen and shrewd investment vision, leading Youzu Interactive from scratch to become a legendary force in the gaming industry. However, his life trajectory came to an abrupt end at its most glorious moment, and the culprit was none other than his most trusted "Chief Risk Control Officer," Xu Gui. What kind of grievances drove Xu Gui to commit such a crime, taking the life of his former benefactor?
Lin Qi was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, and had a deep interest in games from a young age. This interest served as his best teacher, leading him to embark on his entrepreneurial journey. In 2009, at the age of 28, Lin Qi founded Youzu Interactive, beginning his pursuit of dreams. Despite the setbacks of his first two ventures, Lin Qis passion for games remained unwavering. From the perspective of a gamer himself, he developed his first game, "Thirty-Six Strategies," which received critical acclaim upon its release, opening the doors to the game market for him.
Lin Qi then rode the wave of success, launching a series of popular games like "Young Three Kingdoms," "Tomb Raiders," and "Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming," elevating Youzu Interactive to a leading position in the industry. These games were hugely popular among young people, propelling Lin Qi to amass great wealth, joining the ranks of billionaires and becoming a role model for countless entrepreneurs.
In 2014, Youzu Interactive officially listed on the main board of the A-share market, further boosting Lin Qis fortune. Within a year, Youzu Interactives stock price reached its peak, making Lin Qi the fifth richest young man under 40 in Asia with a net worth of $2.2 billion. He was riding high, at the pinnacle of his life, possessing the wealth and fame that many only dreamt of.
However, the gears of fate turned silently, pushing Lin Qi towards a disastrous abyss. His most trusted subordinate, Xu Gui, was secretly plotting a shocking conspiracy.
Xu Gui, hired by Lin Qi as "Chief Risk Control Officer," appeared refined and intellectual but harbored a dark soul. He used his expertise to develop numerous effective risk control plans for Youzu Interactive, saving the company from substantial losses, earning Lin Qis trust in the process. Yet, Xu Guis ambition extended far beyond that. Witnessing Lin Qis extraordinary success at such a young age fueled his envy and resentment.
When Youzu Interactive secured the game rights to "The Three-Body Problem" and prepared to develop the game, Xu Gui saw an opportunity for revenge. He used his authority to secretly create various problems within the game, ultimately leading to user backlash upon its release. Youzu Interactives stock price plummeted, and its reputation tarnished.
Lin Qi couldnt accept this outcome and launched an investigation, finally uncovering Xu Gui as the mastermind behind the sabotage. Though consumed by anger, he didnt immediately bring Xu Gui to justice but instead reassigned him to a different position. This decision only amplified Xu Guis resentment, believing that Lin Qi was retaliating against him, determined to deliver a fatal blow.
Ultimately, Xu Gui chose the most extreme form of revenge: poisoning. On December 15, 2020, Lin Qi experienced physical discomfort after work and was taken to the hospital for examination. Doctors discovered multiple toxins in his system, including tetrodotoxin and mercury.
After a police investigation, Xu Gui became the primary suspect. With sufficient evidence, he was arrested. He confessed to steadily poisoning Lin Qi over several months, ultimately leading to his death due to severe poisoning.
Xu Guis motives were appalling. Fueled by nothing but envy and resentment, he ruthlessly murdered his former boss, who had placed his trust in him and given him opportunities. He treated his colleague as insignificant. In the end, he was sentenced to death, receiving the punishment he deserved.
Lin Qis tragedy is a source of immense regret. It serves as a stark warning against being controlled by negative emotions like envy and resentment. We must never take anyones outward appearance at face value. In real life, we should possess a kind and forgiving heart, interact with others harmoniously, and work together to create a better future.
Lin Qis passing is not only a loss for the gaming industry but also for Chinese business as a whole. The company he founded, Youzu Interactive, continues to thrive in the gaming realm, but he himself will forever remain a legend within the industry.
Lin Qis tragedy also compels us to contemplate how we maintain our initial intentions, confront temptations, and interact with others as we strive for success. May his story serve as a cautionary tale for all, urging us to stay away from evil, cherish life, and create a brighter future.
