Apple Remains at the Top, Domestic Smartphone Market Shuffles: Vivo Falls Out of Top Three, Huawei Second, Xiaomi Holds Steady in Third
The domestic smartphone activation volume list for the 41st week of 2024 (October 7th-13th) has been released, revealing another shift in the market landscape. Apple firmly holds the top spot with a 26.54% market share, far ahead of other brands. Huawei follows closely behind in second place with a 15.78% share, while Xiaomi secures third with 13.34%. Vivo's market share experienced a significant decline, reaching only 13.84%, dropping out of the top three and settling in fourth.
I. Vivo's Activation Volume Champion Status Changes Hands
Vivo held the top spot for smartphone activation volume for ten consecutive weeks from the first to the third quarter of this year. Its success was attributed to its strong internal capabilities and comprehensive marketing strategy. Vivo's products excel in screen display quality, night micro-photography, and camera performance, and they leverage an online and offline media matrix marketing model to bring the brand to the forefront of public awareness.
However, Vivo's market share dropped significantly in the 41st week. This was attributed to market adjustments and its response to the Double 11 shopping festival and new product launches. The Vivo X200 series launched on October 19th, quickly gaining traction with consumers for its excellent screen, performance, and camera configuration. It was dubbed the "Thanos Series" by netizens. By 10:00 AM on October 19th, the Vivo X200 achieved over 2 billion yuan in sales across all channels, hinting at potential sales growth during the Double 11 period.
II. Huawei Ranks Second
Huawei secured second place in activation volume for the 41st week, achieving a 15.78% market share, a 2% decrease compared to the previous week. Even with Vivo's strong momentum and Apple's continuous release of new products, Huawei, despite not yet launching a new phone, managed to retain its second-place position, a notable achievement.
On October 22nd, Huawei held its HarmonyOS Night and All-Scenario New Product Launch Event, unveiling the highly anticipated nova 13 series. This series is positioned for a younger audience and emphasizes a "youthful, fashionable, and exciting" style. With the support of new product sales, Huawei is likely to regain the top spot in smartphone activation rankings in the coming weeks.
III. Xiaomi Stays Secure in Third Place
Xiaomi ranked third in sales for the 41st week, holding a 13.34% market share, a nearly 3% decline from the previous week. Apple's 16 series, especially the 16 PRO Max series, has significantly impacted Xiaomi's performance.
Despite this, Xiaomi's Redmi Note 14 series continues to perform remarkably well, particularly the Pro series, which briefly broke the first-week sales record for the entire Android price segment. Xiaomi has always been a "showstopper" during the Double 11 period, and with the imminent release of the Xiaomi 15 series, sales are expected to climb steadily in the coming weeks. The 2024 Snapdragon Summit took place on October 22nd, and the Xiaomi 15 series is expected to be unveiled later this month or even earlier. Xiaomi 15 boasts substantial improvements in performance and camera capabilities, and its launch is expected to reignite Xiaomi's sales.
IV. OPPO's Ranking Falls to Sixth
OPPO's market share continued to decline in the 41st week, dropping from 13.83% last week to 9.84% this week, falling below the 10% mark. Compared to Vivo, OPPO's performance is particularly surprising, as the two companies frequently compete as rivals in product launches and even hold comparable positions in global smartphone market share rankings.
Despite this, OPPO's continuous decline in the domestic smartphone activation ranking in recent weeks raises concerns. Will OPPO's global market share ranking for 2024 rise? We'll have to wait and see.
V. Apple's 41st Week Sales Lead by a Significant Margin
Apple secured first place in the 41st week's activation volume list with a 26.54% market share, exceeding Huawei in second place by ten percentage points, a truly commanding lead.
Although the Apple 16 series launched on September 20th, initial sales over the first two weeks were less than impressive. Apple's market share in the 41st week also shows a significant difference compared to previous weeks, even lagging behind the 40th week by 6 percentage points, with the Double 11 price reduction promotion still some time away.
However, Apple's ability to maintain its top position in the 41st week is attributed to the strong sales of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Unlike the Apple 16 and Apple 16 PLUS series, which saw a gradual decline in sales, the Apple 16 Pro Max experienced a continuous surge in demand, particularly the Desert Titanium Metal edition, which quickly sold out globally due to enthusiastic buyers.
The reason for the Apple 16 Pro Max taking the lead in the Apple 16 series lies in the fact that its competitor, the Huawei Mate 70 series, has yet to be released. Apple's 16 Pro Max has been able to seize market share early, establishing a dominant position.
Despite not participating in price reductions during the Double 11 promotion, the Apple 16 Pro Max continues to see increasing sales, with potential for further growth in the future. Apple phones consistently lead in sales and market share, not just due to user vanity, but also because Apple truly excels in meeting user experience needs.
Although domestic smartphones have made significant advancements in performance and processors, Apple phones still hold advantages in areas such as fewer ads, pop-up blocking, and a pure and smooth iOS system, providing a superior browsing experience for many.
Conclusion
The current smartphone sales market landscape is complex and unpredictable, with no single manufacturer holding the top spot permanently. In this diverse and competitive landscape, each smartphone manufacturer needs to continuously strive for excellence, leveraging their strengths and leading-edge experiences to seize opportunities and meet the needs of diverse customers. This silent battle for supremacy demonstrates the capabilities and determination of various brands. Moving forward, these brands must continuously innovate to remain competitive and thrive in this fiercely contested market.
