On December 1st, 58-year-old Mu Guangcai and his wife, Wu Dama, were still recovering in hospital in Zixin Village, Qushan Town, Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, Sichuan Province. Recalling the terrifying black bear attack of November 20th, Mu Guangcai remains shaken. At around 5:00 AM, a black bear broke into their home and attacked Wu Dama. In a moment of courage and resourcefulness, Mu Guangcai engaged in a desperate fight with the bear, ultimately killing it and saving his wife, though both sustained serious injuries.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 AM on November 20th. Wu Dama was looking at her phone in their room while Mu Guangcai was preparing pig feed in the kitchen. A sudden noise outside prompted Wu Dama to investigate, thinking it was their pigs. She was unexpectedly attacked by a black bear that had entered their yard and knocked to the ground.

Hearing his wifes screams, Mu Guangcai immediately switched on the lights and rushed outside. The scene that greeted him was horrifying: a large black bear was pinning his wife down and biting her. Without hesitation, he grabbed the nearest farm tool a double-headed hammer and began striking the bear. However, fearing he might injure his wife, he aimed for the bears back instead of its head. "It felt like hitting cotton," he recalled.

Startled, the bear released Wu Dama and turned on Mu Guangcai. A fierce struggle ensued. The bear lunged at both Mu Guangcai and Wu Dama repeatedly, the couple fighting back inside and outside their home, sustaining numerous bites and scratches. Mu Guangcai remembers their dog barking frantically, which may have momentarily distracted the bear.

Leveraging his years of experience as a carpenter, Mu Guangcai knew the location of his tools. During the fight, he picked up an axe and a woodworking adze, using them to strike the bear with all his might. Finally, after a desperate struggle, the bear fell to the ground.

Exhausted, Mu Guangcai collapsed. He and his wife were severely injured. He immediately called the police (110) and an ambulance (120). Police and paramedics arrived swiftly, transporting them to the hospital. Mu Guangcai suffered a dislocated left shoulder and multiple scratches on his back, head, and chest; Wu Dama sustained bite wounds to her face and scratches on her chest and back. Fortunately, neither suffered life-threatening injuries.

With improvements in China's ecological environment and strengthened wildlife protection efforts, the population and range of black bears and other wildlife have expanded, increasing the likelihood of human-wildlife conflict. Mu Guangcai's actions have raised questions about potential penalties for killing wildlife in self-defense.

National regulations stipulate that individuals are not legally liable for harming wildlife in self-defense if their lives are in immediate danger. Mu Guangcai's actions fall under this regulation.

To mitigate wildlife-related damages, Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County has been purchasing wildlife damage compensation insurance since 2021. The county government is also increasing public awareness of wildlife safety, installing warning signs in key areas, and promoting self-protection measures.

Neighbor Chen Dingcui stated she had never heard of a bear attack in the area. Mu Guangcais bravery has earned him the villagers' admiration. "He was so brave; our neighbors were all stunned. He killed the bear alone and saved his wife," she said.

Mu Guangcai is 157cm tall and weighs just over 100 jin (approximately 66kg). The bear was significantly larger and heavier. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing potential for human-wildlife conflict and the need for enhanced preventative measures and self-protection awareness.

This event highlights the importance of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. It underscores the need for stronger wildlife protection efforts while simultaneously raising public awareness to minimize human-wildlife conflict. The government's prompt response and insurance coverage demonstrate its commitment to public safety and wildlife conservation. This incident prompts reflection on how to better balance human development and wildlife protectiona challenge that requires ongoing exploration and solutions. Only through harmonious coexistence can we build a better future.
