Biomimetic super hydrophobic coating can solve the "rain attenuation effect" of 5G radomes

On June 4, the reporter of Science and Technology Daily learned from the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the silicon based functional materials group of the Research and Development Center of Environmental Materials and Ecological Chemistry of the Institute cooperated with Shandong Xinna Super Sparse New Materials Co., Ltd. to develop 5G radome and radar radome super sparse anti rain aging coating with excellent pressure resistance, mechanical stability and weather resistance, which can effectively solve the "rain aging effect" of 5G signals in rainfall. The relevant research paper was recently published in Nature Communications.
The 5G radome is an important component of the 5G base station, used to protect the antenna system from external complex environmental interference, improve antenna accuracy and service life. However, rainwater can form water droplets or a water film on the surface of the 5G radome, resulting in a "rain attenuation effect", where the dielectric constant of water is very high and it can absorb and reflect a large amount of electromagnetic waves, leading to severe attenuation of the 5G signal.
Zhang Junping's team collaborated with Shandong Xinna Superhydrophobic New Materials Co., Ltd. to develop a 5G radome and radar radome super hydrophobic anti rain attenuation coating that combines excellent pressure resistance, mechanical stability, and weather resistance. This coating can prevent raindrops from adhering to the surface of 5G radomes and radar radomes, effectively solving their "rain attenuation effect", and has been applied in practical applications on 5G radomes and radar radomes in multiple places across the country.
Zhang Junping introduced that although the introduction of the binder can improve the mechanical stability of the coating, it also embeds the low surface energy nanoparticles, resulting in a high surface energy of the coating, which in turn leads to poor superhydrophobicity and pressure resistance of the coating. Through extensive literature research and combined with previous research experience, the team systematically designed the coating and successfully produced a biomimetic ultra hydrophobic coating that combines excellent pressure resistance, mechanical stability, and weather resistance.
Firstly, the three-level micro/micro/nanostructure and dense nanostructure of the coating give it excellent pressure resistance. Secondly, the approximate isotropic structure of the coating and the bonding effect of the adhesive give it excellent mechanical stability. At the same time, we use chemically inert raw materials to prepare the coating, which gives it excellent weather resistance, "said Zhang Junping.
In addition, the substrate for 5G radomes and radars is mostly ABS plastic. This type of substrate has low surface energy, resulting in weak bonding strength between the coating and the substrate. "Zhang Junping said that the team optimized the types of binders and selected binders with excellent bonding strength with ABS and other substrates to prepare the coating, successfully overcoming the defect of weak bonding strength between the coating and ABS and other substrates.
After 3 years of research and development, industrialization, and large-scale application, the performance of the coating has been significantly improved. Zhang Junping told reporters that in the future, the team will explore more potential application fields of biomimetic super hydrophobic coatings, achieving their engineering applications in high-voltage transmission lines, bridges, tunnels to prevent icing, 5G antenna covers, radar covers to prevent rain decay, anti hazardous liquid adhesion, electronic product waterproof and oil film, self-cleaning municipal engineering, and other aspects.
